Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Cast and James Gunn Selling Signed Poster for Veterans Day Auction https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3-mcu-poster-auction-james-gunn-veterans-day-ebay/ Sun, 05 Nov 2023 00:51:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 69f60e54-bbb7-4a3a-834c-e38aa10e7a64

Veterans Day is Saturday, November 11th, and it's a holiday dedicated to honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Since the holiday is right around the corner, director James Gunn and the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are auctioning off a signed poster on eBay with all net proceeds going to support Homes For Our Troops, Inc. Gunn shared the link today, and at the time of this writing, the bidding is currently up to $5,100.

"This #VeteransDay, I'm supporting @homesforourtrps by offering a @Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Poster signed by me, @prattprattpratt,@zoesaldana, Bradley Cooper, @DaveBautista, @karengillan, @PomKlementieff, @seangunn, @NathanFillion, @MariaBakalova96 & Chukwudi Iwuji! Bid now on @ebay to support injured Veterans nationwide," Gunn wrote. "Oh it's also signed by Will Poulter," he added. You can check out the details in the post below:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Set a World Record:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set the record for the most makeup appliances used in a single film with more than 23,000 prosthetics used across more than 1,000 actors. For comparison, there were 1,200 prosthetics used in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Before Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 beat the record, it was held by The Grinch for over 20 years.

"We always knew that it was going to be a lot because when you're reading the script, and you're designing the characters you're kind of like, 'This could be a big movie...' I don't think any of us truly understood the sheer volume of work that was done until we were there," Legacy FX co-founder Lindsay MacGowan told Deadline.

Chris Pratt Almost Gave Up On Marvel:

Earlier this year, Pratt appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and revealed he almost gave up on auditioning for Marvel before Guardians.

"I auditioned for Thor, but not even to be Thor - but to be one of the sidekick guys, and I didn't get a callback," Pratt shared. "Usually they give you a little bit of feedback, and I remember the casting director goes, 'Wow. You really made a big choice there.' Which is code for like, 'Hey, dial back the acting there, guy.'" He added, "It got to the point where I was never gonna audition for Marvel again ... I was like, 'This is stupid, I'm never gonna be in a Marvel movie.'"

"I mean, all of them," Pratt said when asked which Marvel projects he auditioned for. "Anything that came out that needed a guy that even remotely looked like me, I auditioned for in some way or another. And I would either submit a tape and they would say 'No, we don't need to see him,' or I would get there and see them, they'd go, 'No, that's the last time we need to see you."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now streaming on Disney+.

Taraja Ramsess, Avengers: Endgame and Black Panther Stuntman, Dies at 41 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/taraja-ramsess-avengers-endgame-black-panther-stuntman-dead-41-car-accident/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 21:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 2f38015d-9ae6-4838-96ed-a598ac60afda

Taraja Ramsess, a stuntman known for his work on Avengers: Endgame and Black Panther, has passed away at age 41. The tragic news broke earlier this week that Ramsess was killed alongside two of his children on Halloween night in a car accident in Atlanta, Georgia. The news was initially reported by local affiliate WSB-TV. Ramsess died along with his 13-year-old daughter, Sundari, and 1-month-old daughter, Fugibo, after their car hit a tractor-trailer that had broken down on the highway. Ramsess' 10-year-old son is also in critical condition while his other 3-year-old child was hospitalized. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family, which you can view here.

"Akili Ramsess, a dear friend and colleague to so many, lost her eldest son, the beautiful and talented Taraja, and two of her grandchildren - Taraja's 13-year-old daughter Sundari and 8-week-old daughter Fujibo - in a horrific traffic accident on Oct. 31. Her 10-year-old grandson, Kisasi is on life support, continuing to fight. We are not sure what her immediate needs are, but we know there will be many. Anyone who knows Akili knows that her greatest joys are her three boys and 10 grandchildren. Her love and devotion to her family knows no limits," the GoFundMe reads.

"We will continue to update this posting with more information as it becomes available and as Akili and her family are ready to release it. I know you share our feelings that this devastating loss is unfathomable, and we are just trying to take a first step in helping Akili down the very long road ahead. Please give what you can."

Ramsess' filmography also included stunt work on Avengers: Infinity War, Black Lightning, Bad Boys For Life, The Suicide Squad, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Atlanta, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Creed III, and They Cloned Tyrone. He also worked in the art department on various projects with a focus on props and set dressing. His credits included Halloween II (2009), The Vampire Diaries, Fast Five, Teen Wolf, The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Furious 7.

Ramsess' friend Tony Tucci spoke to WSB-TV about the accident.

"When I first heard about it, I broke down," Tucci said. "I had to sit down ... He was always a family man. They would come and sit and watch him train, and they would jump in and start training to."

"He was always sharing his experiences, happy and glad to be part of that community," Tucci added. "During the screening of Black Panther, he couldn't stop talking about it. He was so happy to be a part of it."

Our thoughts are with Ramsess' friends and family at this difficult time.

Cryptic Marvel Post May Hint at Major Loki Finale Theory https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/cryptic-marvel-post-may-hint-at-major-loki-finale-theory/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 20:53:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 9c2d0340-f4c6-4592-80d9-cd490106e477

The penultimate episode of Loki's second season, "Science/Fiction," was released this week and it's got Marvel fans talking about some major theories. The episode saw Loki (Tom Hiddleston) travel across different timelines to meet his friends in their true times and places. After he reunited everyone in order to save the TVA, many fans think Loki could become the new "He Who Remains" at the end of time while others believe we are witnessing the original formation of the TVA. In the comics, Loki is currently the God of Stories, which could be a clue to the character's MCU endgame. There have been some interesting hints on social media, including the official account for Thor sharing a clip from Thor: The Dark World. Is Marvel Studios teasing that Loki is about to get his "throne?"

"All this because Loki desires a throne," Odin (Anthony Hopkins) says in the clip. "It is my birthright," Loki shouts back. The post was simply captioned with a clock emoji, which has fans reeling in the comments. You can check out the post below:

What Is Loki Season 2 About?

Marvel Studios fan-favorite Tom Hiddleston stars in Loki Season 2, returning as the titular God of Mischief for another round of time-traveling hijinx on Disney+ on October 6th. Loki is once again joined by Mobius (Owen Wilson) as the two attempt to keep the timelines intact. After the events of Season 1 saw his variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) kill He Who Remains and unleash the wrath of Kang the Conqueror upon the Multiverse, Loki must once again embark on an adventure to keep reality from collapsing. Loki was last seen in the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he and Mobius were keeping tabs on one of Kang's mysterious variants. Loki Season 2 will continue the story of the Multiverse Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One of Loki's New Characters Is Based on a Real Person https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-loki-season-2-casey-easter-egg-frank-morris-mcu/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 19:08:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 8465837e-c9af-4d93-a97f-03c0b58b1430

The first season of Loki included a somewhat heartbreaking revelation about the TVA. All of the agency's employees are themselves variants, each with no memory of the real identities and lives they lived on the timeline. It's a revelation that meant that each of the people that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) had grown close to all had their own unexplored stories and this week's Season 2 episode of Loki, Episode 5 "Science/Fiction", offered a glimpse into those lives thanks to the collapse of the Temporal Loom and as it turns out, the true identity of one of Loki's friends is actually based on a real person -- and one of American history's more interesting mysteries.

Warning: spoilers for the fifth episode of Loki's second season beyond this point.

After the Temporal Loom's explosion, Loki finds himself timeslipping again and one of the first places he timeslips to is a branched timeline at Alcatraz in 1962 San Francisco where he finds Casey (Eugene Cordero). It turns out that in his real life, Casey's real identity was that of Frank who is orchestrating a prison break with two other men. They begin their escape by boat, but Loki timeslips away.

Frank is based on the real-life Frank Morris who had been sent to Alcatraz in 1960 for burglary and larceny and the two men with him are brothers John and Clarence Anglin (played by Loki directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson). In real life, the trio carried out an escape just as what was portrayed in the episode. The real story has become something of legend with the three men building fake heads using sheets, soap, paint, and even human hair and using them to trick the guards into believing that they were still in bed. The Anglins used spoons and a drill that they build from a vacuum cleaner and, along with another man named Allen West slowly cut their way through the concrete walls of their cells under the cover of Morris's evening accordion practice which hit the noise. Eventually, on June 11/12, 1962, Morris and the Anglins made a break for it -- West couldn't get out of his cell in time to join them. The trio set off in a boat made from raincoats and a resin that they learned to make from articles from the prison library.

While the trio's escape was pretty ingenious, it's also one of modern American history's more unusual unanswered questions. While the men appear to have made it off of the island, there is also no actual evidence the made it to the shore. The raft was later found with some of their personal effects in a plastic bag and there are plenty of theories about what actually happened to them, but many believe they didn't make it to shore and drowned. The FBI officially declared them dead in 1979.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time that Loki has taken on one of American history's more fascinating crime mysteries. The Season 1 premiere of Loki revealed that the loveable trickster is actually D.B. Cooper, the notorious perpetrator of the 1971 plane hijacking that remains unsolved to this day. If course, in Loki's case, he didn't have a forgotten life as a hijacker; Loki only carried out the infamous crime because he lost a bet with his brother Thor.

Echo Will Be An Be An "Exploration of Trauma" Featuring Flashbacks To Maya Lopez's Ancestors https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/echo-mcu-exploration-of-trauma-flashbacks-to-maya-lopezs-ancestors-choctaw-nation/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 18:43:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 1c99384c-5dd8-4dfe-875a-c94f33bc399b

Echo's first trailer was released today, and the new Marvel Studios series is set to debut in January on Disney+ and Hulu. The new show continues the story of Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox), the character who was first introduced in the MCU in Hawkeye back in 2021. ComicBook.com recently attended a trailer event for the series, and director and executive producer Sydney Freeland confirmed that Echo is a villain, and teased some of the darker themes in the series. The post-Avengers: Endgame era of the MCU has featured a lot of characters dealing with grief and trauma, and it sounds like Echo won't be a reprieve from those ideas.

"Thematically, this show is sort of an exploration of trauma, how we deal with it, how we cope with it, how it affects us, how we affect it, how it affects those around us," Freeland shared. "The theme of the show is very much, we're trying to be street, we're operating a little more on a street level sort of view. These aren't cosmic consequences. It's not the fate of the universe at stake. This is the fate of family. And what we're going to see is sort of the beginnings of the origin for not only Maya Lopez but then also this sort of seismic sort of fracturing event that's going to affect her entire family. And that we're going to see has ripples and consequences throughout the entire show."

Similar to Ms. Marvel, Echo will also feature flashbacks to the titular character's ancestors.

"One other thread that I haven't mentioned thus far is that we are also going to be, we have this two-pronged approach to the series. There's this family drama sort of driving everything, but then there's this undercurrent of this, there's sort of a fantastical side, which is that we are going to be visiting Maya's matrilineal ancestors ... going quite a bit backward in time. And that is going to those two things, this family drama and these ancestral stories that we're going to see are going to come head to head," Freeland explained.

Sydney Freeland Talks "Authenticity" in Echo:

During the press event for Echo, Freeland also spoke about the importance of representing both the deaf community and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

"Authenticity, I think, well, I think it started in the writer's room was having very much, it's a multi-pronged approach," Freeland answered when asked what was most important to her when making Echo. "It's like we had to have Native representation. That was a must. We had to have deaf representation. That was a must. So it really started within our writers, our writer's room. And then I think with, obviously when I came on board, then we tried to keep that energy going, but we had Native people throughout the behind the scenes and front of the camera as well. But I think another big thing that was important to us is the Choctaw, our partnership with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Early on in the process, once we kind of had our pilot script, we took a trip. It was myself and my department heads, and one of the great things is that none of them have ever been to a pow before."

She explained, "And I think what I realized in that moment was, which I think rarely happens in my experience with being portrayed in Native films, is going to the people and getting their partnership basically it was crickets on the side of the table and basically I said, 'No, no, we're not here to tell you what we're going to do. We are here to create a dialogue so that we can get your input and create a more authentic portrayal of the Choctaw people and culture.' Because again, also speaking for myself, I'm Navajo, I'm not Choctaw, I don't speak Choctaw, I'm not Choctaw culture, but that was one of the big things that was important for us was creating a dialogue with the Choctaw Nation and getting their support."

Echo is being released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10th. The show will leave Hulu on April 9th.

Blade: Albert Hughes Shares Why He Passed On MCU Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/blade-mcu-marvel-studios-movie-albert-hughes-passed/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 16:06:00 +0000 Aaron Perine da473bf7-5a99-4bcb-8fe4-764d2f96fa13

Albert Hughes revealed why he passed on Marvel Studios' Blade during a recent podcast appearance. The Continental director spoke to Josh Horowitz about the Blade movie on Happy, Sad, Confused. When discussing the project, he said that the studio mandates and requests might have overwhelmed his vision for Blade. Basically, signing up for a Marvel project essentially gives you a lot of clout. But, with that notoriety comes some control concessions. Kevin Feige and the producers have certain asks of each project and the creatives in charge have to work together to achieve that vision along with their own hopes and desires for individual heroes. Check out what Hughes had to say below!

The director began, "I've been in talks with the obvious studio about superhero movies a couple of times, but I always felt uncomfortable because I knew it was a system. And they're very nice, and I went through a long process. In fact, I broke down all their movies and put them in a spreadsheet and broke down the box office, watching the title scores, where the VFX ranks, I had to do a deep dive on them."

"And I got, halfway, not very close, halfway through the process, and I go, 'No, I would implode from the kind of controlled nature of that world and not being able to do what I do.' And I don't understand why a real filmmaker would want to be in that system," he added. "I understand why up-and-comers would, which they do a good job of. finding people at the right time. But I think I would implode."

The Marvels Director Nia DaCosta Reflects On The Marvel Experience

(Photo: VALERIE MACON)

The Marvels drops in just a few short days and Nia DaCosta is behind the camera for that Marvel Studios movie. She talked to Vanity Fair about some of the same concerns that Hughes shared. A lot of film fans believe that the individual directors have little to no input on the final product when it comes to the MCU. DaCosta argues that this isn't the case. But, she also had to acknowledge that producers like Kevin Feige are going to have requests that necessitate you to really be flexible when making movies of this size and scope.

The studio encouraged her to talk to other Marvel directors about their experience. Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coogler simply told her to be herself, and she had a fun response to that. "I said, 'Ryan, what are you talking about?'" DaCosta said. He would explain, "You can't do anything but be yourself, so bring that to the table. They can choose to take some and leave some, but that's what your job is."

"It is a Kevin Feige production, it's his movie," DaCosta continued. "So I think you live in that reality, but I tried to go in with the knowledge that some of you is going to take a back seat."

What's Going On With Blade?

mahershala-ali-vs-wesley-snipes-blade-movies.jpg

Well, the movie is still in development. Blade recently changed writers and directors after it became clear that Marvel Studios wanted something different with their approach. Now, Yann Demange will be in charge of the vampire hunter's big solo movie. MCU fans will remember we've already heard Mahershala Ali's Blade back in Eternals. Producer Nate Moore walked ComicBook.com's Phase Zero through the story of how that happened last year.

"[Blade] was [part of the scene] for reasons hopefully that would become apparent as you see more things, but [Mahershal Ali] wasn't there on the day," Eternals producer Nate Moore told our panel. "And we talked about two versions of that, one where we would cut to him and one where we wouldn't. 'How textual do you want it to be?' And again, it was more just for the fun of it, to tease it a little bit, to hear the voice and not see the man. He was game to do it. Because the Ebony Blade, the characteristics of the Ebony Blade are not dissimilar to some degree to vampirism and we think that's an interesting kind of thing to play with. So, we kind of knew that was on the table."

The Marvels: Director Reportedly "Very Much Involved" During Post-Production https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-marvels-director-report-involved-nia-dacosta-captain-marvel-mcu/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 14:45:00 +0000 Aaron Perine ecc6677e-13ca-4aa7-82c7-d3e589f19692

The Marvels director Nia DaCosta was reportedly "very much involved" during post-production on the Marvel Studios film. Collider reported that DaCosta actually stared involved in the editing process while being in London for her next project. A recent piece from Variety claimed that The Marvels' director basically took off the first chance that she could have. But, these new details from Collider paint a different picture. While working on her next project, Hedda starring MCU favorite Tessa Thompson, DaCosta moved to London. From there, she helped with the film through post-production as questions and decisions arose. So, it seems as though that bombshell Marvel report has some interesting cracks.

Other parts of the Variety article that have been refuted in recent days include the comments from an unnamed source about Marvel Studios' Blade movie. One of the project's former writers said on Twitter that he had never heard of a script where Blade was playing second (or really third?) fiddle to some other women characters in the movie. A lot of fan reacted with outrage to the claims that a Blade movie wouldn't center the main character. However, the writer's comments throw that report into question. As the new cycle around Marvel continues to percolate, patience might just win out in this wild environment where everyone is competing for eyeballs.

Nia DaCosta Has Been Happy With The Marvel Experience

the-marvels-imax-poster.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Studios)

DaCosta has had to do a lot of the promotional heavy-lifting around The Marvels. With the writers' strike still going on, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani can't really speak on the film like a normal Marvel press tour. So, the director has had to give her comments. Vanity Fair asked DaCosta about her experience working with Marvel Studios. The clear respect from other industry professionals during production is something that surprised her and made this who task easier. The Marvels director remembered moments on the Candyman set where people said, "things that are super inappropriate, that you would just never say to anyone else because they were so specific to my gender, my race, my age."

"I realized it wasn't ever gonna be about how much power I amassed or how many great movies I made, or if I won awards, it was always just going to be the people that I surrounded myself with," DaCosta added. "The thing that I've been most surprised by lately is how much respect I'm getting from these middle-aged white dudes that I work with."

The Marvels Hits Theaters Extremely Soon

Marvel's Echo Episode Count Confirmed https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/echo-marvel-tv-show-series-disney-plus-mcu-episodes/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 14:25:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 08856530-7b0a-427c-abfd-8ac97fcad979

Marvel Studios has confirmed the episode count for its upcoming Echo series. Marvel will divide Echo into five episodes, all debuting at once, when it launches in January. Echo marks multiple firsts for Marvel Studios. It is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to be released simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu (which Disney recently agreed to acquire outright from co-owner Comcast). It's the first Marvel Studios release under the new continuity-light, character-focused Marvel Spotlight banner. It'll be Marvel Studios' first original series rated TV-MA. It's the first Marvel series to focus on an MCU villain. Picking up after Marvel's Hawkeye series, Echo follows Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she remains on the run from the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio).

"We wanted something that, again, if you're coming off of Hawkeye, and you have to keep in mind she's a villain," Echo director/executive producer Sydney Freeland said during the Echo trailer debut event. "She's a villain. And so tonally, we wanted to lean into that. I think in talking with the executives and our approach, and when building visual style, it was sort of like, 'Oh yeah, lean into that, lean into that.'"

With the TV-MA rating and focus on street-level characters over MCU continuity, Echo could be the return of Netflix-style dark and gritty Marvel television that fans of Marvel's Daredevil and the other shows from that era may love. Echo will include some references to Marvel's Daredevil as well. Some already popped up in Friday's Echo trailer.

"I dunno if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil, it's great," Freeland said. "And so we certainly took, obviously the Daredevil fight, it was a little bit of a nod to that series ... But then also we wanted very adamantly to show that these are people in our show. They bleed, they die, they get killed, and there are real-world consequences. And again, talking, it's not the fate of the universe at stake because I think once you go that broad, you can sort of lose sight a little bit. And so that kind of dictated the tone a little bit. So I guess to answer your question, it was a conversation, but it wasn't that reason."

The timing of Freeland's comments about the Netflix Marvel shows is noteworthy. Kevin Feige recently clarified what is and isn't Marvel Cinematic Universe canon but hinted that those lines may blur as the Multiverse Saga continues.

Marvel's Echo Cast

Echo stars Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo and Vincent D'Onofrio as the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk. The show's supporting cast includes Chaske Spencer, Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, and Cody Lightning. Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie directed the series.

According to Marvel Studios' official synopsis for the series, Echo spotlights "Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk's (Vincent D'Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy. "

All five episodes of Echo will debut on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10th. Fans can see Alaqua Cox in action as Maya Lopez in Marvel's Hawkeye, which is streaming now on Disney+.

Echo TV Series Will Be Released Under "Marvel Spotlight" Banner https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/echo-tv-series-released-marvel-spotlight-banner-trailer-new-mcu/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 04:28:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson e3671ed9-3be5-485f-93ad-cee11fb3c044

The first trailer for Echo made its debut on Friday, showcasing the latest Disney+ series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The live-action series will not only be the franchise's first TV-MA showing, but it will air simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu -- and apparently, it will also kick off a brand-new banner. In a recent article about Echo, Marvel Studios revealed that the series is the inaugural title under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner. The label will be used on titles that present a wider variety of stories, which don't require as much prior knowledge of the MCU. The name Marvel Spotlight originates from a Marvel Comics anthology series of the same name, which ran across the 1970s and 1980s and led to many characters' debuts.

"Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity," Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum explained. "Just like comics fans didn't need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn't need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what's happening in Maya's story."

What Is Echo About?

The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward. Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Stephen Broussard, Richie Palmer, Marion Dayre, and Jason Gavin (Blackfeet) are executive producers. Amy Rardin, Sydney Freeland, Christina King (Seminole), and Jennifer Booth are co-executive producers.

"I grew up not seeing anyone that looked like me on the screen, so now this generation will be able to have someone -- a person of color who's deaf -- that they can see," Cox explained in an interview late last year. "So having this authentic representation is amazing."

"You will see, once she leaves New York, she's faced with some issues," Cox revealed. "So she goes to Oklahoma, where she originally lives. She will try to find the definition of family and community and what it means to her, because she's been alone for so long. So she wants to try to get back involved with her family, and connect with her Indigenous roots as well."

Doctor Who Showrunner Was Asked to Produce a Marvel Show, But Doesn't Know What It Was https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/doctor-who-showrunner-produce-marvel-show-russell-t-davies-mcu/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 02:44:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson e6fc11dc-3cf5-4725-986a-159535f8bf72

For some, Russell T. Davies has become a ubiquitous part of the television landscape, thanks to his work on Doctor Who and Queer as Folk. As a new interview with Davies, who is about to make his return to Who, reveals, he almost had a role in helping a completely different franchise. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Davies revealed that he was asked to showrun a "British Marvel show" -- presumably for Marvel Studios, which has ventured into television in recent years on Disney+. The only caveat is that Davies wasn't told what the show would even be -- and to this day, he still can't figure out what project it might've been.

"I got asked to showrun a British Marvel show, but [they said] 'We can't tell you what it is,'" Davies explained. The director laughs loudly, "To this day, I watch them and I can't work out which show that was going to be. Obviously planning to make a British Marvel show that I haven't seen. Has that happened?"

Who Will Be the Next Doctor Who?

Sex Education and Barbie star Ncuti Gatwa is set to play the Fifteenth Doctor in the upcoming 60th anniversary season of Doctor Who, which will be showrun by Davies. David Tennant, who portrayed the franchise's Tenth Doctor, will also be returning as the Fourteenth Doctor for a string of specials later this fall.

"Oh God, what a force of nature," Tennant exclaimed in a recent interview. "I've caught a little bit of him at work and it's pretty exciting. I mean, what advice would you give someone? You can see Ncuti has so much talent and energy. He's so inspired and charismatic. The thing about something like this is: it's the peripherals, it's not the job. It's the other stuff that comes with it, that I didn't see coming. It's a show that has so much focus and enthusiasm on it. It's not like Ncuti hasn't been in a massive Netflix series [Sex Education,] but Doctor Who is on a slightly different level. It's cross-generational, international, and has so much history, that it feels like it belongs to everyone. To be at the center of the show is wonderful and humbling, but also a bit overwhelming and terrifying. It doesn't come without some difficulties, such as the immediate loss of anonymity. It takes a bit of getting used to if that's not been your life up to that point. I was very lucky that when I joined, Billie Piper [who portrayed on-screen companion, Rose] was still there. She'd lived in a glare of publicity since she was 14, so she was a great guide for how to live life under that kind of scrutiny. I owe a degree of sanity to Billie."

Marvel's Blade Reboot Was Originally Supposed to Be Released Today https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-blade-reboot-original-release-date-today-delay-mcu/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 01:38:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 76237a32-8a8c-4044-b93f-fd50093e850a

The Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is beginning to encompass an ever-growing number of stories, which have been told both in movies and in original programming on Disney+. One facet of the franchise that fans have been eager to see onscreen is Blade -- but unfortunately, it has crossed an unusual milestone. At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios' Blade reboot was announced to be released in theaters this weekend, on Friday, November 3, 2023. Obviously, that has yet to come to pass, with the film ultimately being delayed to a current release date of February 14, 2025.

At the time of this writing, Blade has not yet started production, with a director change, a number of writers changes, and a shutdown due to this year's writers' strike and actors' strike. Earlier this week, a report from Variety shed light on some of the narrative iterations Blade has gone through, with a report indicating that one version had the titular character as a supporting character of a female-led ensemble. The report hints that Marvel hopes to make the film for a budget of less than $100 million.

What Is Marvel's Blade Reboot About?

Blade will star Mahershala Ali as Eric Brooks, a half-vampire "Daywalker" who moonlights as a vampire hunter. Ma Goth, Delroy Lindo, Aaron Pierre, and Milan Ray have all been attached to the film. The film will tentatively be Ali's second appearance in the MCU, after his voice was heard in the post-credits scene of 2021's Eternals.

"[Blade] was [part of the scene] for reasons hopefully that would become apparent as you see more things, but [Mahershal Ali] wasn't there on the day," Eternals producer Nate Moore previously told ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast.

What do you think of the newest update surrounding Marvel's Blade reboot? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Blade is currently set to be released exclusively in theaters on September 6, 2024.

Marvel Announces X-Men: Forever https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-x-men-forever-kieron-gillen-luca-maresca/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 21:49:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 23d2a571-ce2f-48a1-9838-f957166c6e71

The final mysteries of Marvel's Krakoa era will be unraveled this spring in a new series titled X-Men: Forever. The X-Men have had plenty of highs after establishing their sovereign mutant nation on the island of Krakoa during Jonathan Hickman's relaunch of the franchise. However, things have slowly gotten worse for mutantkind, culminating in an attack by the anti-mutant organization Orchis at this year's Hellfire Gala. The Krakoa era will come to an end in Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X, and the X-Men: Forever spinoff series will bring long-awaited answers while also setting up the next stage of the X-Men's evolution.

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski announced X-Men: Forever while attending the Lucca Comics & Games festival in Italy this week. The four-issue limited series comes from Immortal X-Men writer Kieron Gillen and artist Luca Maresca. X-Men: Forever picks up story threads from Immortal X-Men, including the quest for Dominion, the interpersonal conflicts of the Quiet Council, the escape from the White Hot Room, and the divine intervention of the Phoenix. Fans can see the important role the Phoenix plays in the series on the cover of the first issue by Mark Brooks.

How does the X-Men Krakoa era end?

Marvel announced more details on the end of the X-Men's Krakoa era at the Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con. Three series will be the focus point of the storytelling: Gerry Duggan and Lucas Werneck's Fall of the House of X, Kieron Gillen and R.B. Silva's Rise of the Powers of X, and Al Ewing and Luciano Vecchio's Resurrection of Magneto.

Fall of the House of X features Cyclops on trial and facing the death penalty as mutantkind prepares to make its last stand against Orchis; Rise of the Powers of X takes place in a future where Orchis is victorious, but Nimrod and Omega Sentinel have other plans for ascension beyond mutants and humans; and Resurrection of Magneto forces Storm to make a choice. Does she go against Magneto's wishes to bring the master of magnetism back from death? And will he survive the shock of what has happened to mutants since his death if she does?

"X-MEN FOREVER is Luca and myself doing a coda to Immortal X-Men, a requiem for the Krakoan age and generally setting fire to all time and space," Gillen explained. "It's the manipulative hand in the steel glove that is Rise of the Powers of X. By the time it drops, you'll be wondering what on earth is going on with certain characters, and X-MEN FOREVER will give you all the answers."

A description of X-Men: Forever reads, "HAUNTED HOUSE OF X! How can you kill a digital god? What do you do when the Phoenix is bleeding out into nothing? There's been questions that have haunted you since the end of Immortal X-Men. Finally, some answers. There's also been some questions that have haunted you since the START of immortal X-men. Finally, some answers, too. But not the ones you're expecting..."

X-Men: Forever #1 goes on sale March 20th.

ComicBook Nation: MCU Crisis Report, Echo Trailer & Invincible Season 2 Review https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-echo-trailer-mcu-crisis-loki-episode-5-invincible-season-2-spoilers-watch/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 21:00:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 898c119e-5cd7-4b1c-badc-e4863df54023

The ComicBook Nation Crew breaks down Marvel's ECHO trailer and asks the hard question: Can the MCU recover from the multiple disasters detailed in a new report? Is Loki Season 2 Episode 5 a hopeful indicator that the series will end strong and make this Multiverse Saga make sense?

PLUS: Amazon Prime Video's Gen V hits its finale just as Invincible Season 2 premieres - and we look back at It Follows ten years later as a sequel, They Follow, is announced!

Invincible Season 2 Part 1 Review

(Photo: Amazon Prime Video)

ComicBook Nation Guest-host Logan Moore had the following to say in his Invincible Season 2 review:

The first four episodes of Invincible Season 2 feel like they barely scratch the surface of where this series is heading. In fact, the long wait between Episode 4 and 5 is likely the biggest problem that I have with Season 2 so far, as I would have preferred to see all of these episodes release in one go. Despite this, Invincible continues to be one of the best and most unique superhero shows around and almost certainly won't disappoint those who have been counting down the days until its return.

Echo Director Confirms You Don't Need To Watch Other Marvel Shows To Understand the New Series https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/echo-director-confirms-dont-need-to-watch-other-marvel-shows-daredevil-hawkeye-to-understand-series/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 20:43:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak a6983238-1fe2-4b6c-acc0-f89273ac6585

Echo is heading to Disney+ and Hulu in January, and the new Marvel Studios series will feature some familiar faces. The show follows Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) as she "struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) AKA Kingpin." Maya was first introduced in Hawkeye, and D'Onofrio is best known for Daredevil. It was previously confirmed that Echo will feature the MCU's next appearance by Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Despite Echo, Daredevil, and Kingpin all appearing in previous Marvel shows, Echo's director and executive producer Sydney Freeland says you don't need to watch anything else to understand the events of the upcoming series.

"Yeah, our hope is that you don't need to have seen any other Marvel show before because - so obviously we have to establish ourselves in the MCU - but then we quickly make our own path," Freeland shared at an Echo press event attended by ComicBook.com. "So it is tough because I've seen so much of the market content, I'm so familiar with Hawkeye. It was something we're very conscious of, I'll say that much. But the goal is that, hopefully, you don't have to have seen anything coming into this."

What Is Echo Rated?

It sounds like Echo will have more in common with the Defenderverse than Marvel's Disney+ shows. Not only is Echo going to be released all at once, but it will be Marvel's first Disney+ series that will be released simultaneously on Hulu. Echo will also be Marvel's first Disney+ series to be rated TV-MA.

"It's our first TV-MA show, so it's a little on the grittier side for Marvel," executive producer Brad Winderbaum recently told members of the press at the trailer event for Echo. "And I think again, shows kind of the breadth of what Marvel's capable of. And certainly something, again, if you know the comics and know the history, it feels very in line, but is kind of a new direction for the brand, especially on Disney+. And to that end, it's going to be, for many reasons, going to be simultaneously released on Disney+ and Hulu."

"We wanted very adamantly to show that these are people in our show," Freeland explained. "They bleed, they die, they get killed, and there are real-world consequences. And again, talking, it's not the fate of the universe at stake because I think once you go that broad, you can sort of lose sight a little bit. And so that kind of dictated the tone a little bit."

Echo is being released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10th. The show will leave Hulu on April 9th.

Deadpool 3 Director Reveals Key Star Wars Moment That Inspired New Marvel Movie https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/deadpool-3-director-shawn-levy-star-wars-return-jedi-moment-inspired/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 20:33:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 82b873f3-39d3-4417-bbbf-681ef47682fe

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy is pointing to Star Wars as a major source of inspiration for what he hopes to achieve in his Deadpool and Wolverine team-up film. In a new interview, Levy talks about a specific moment in Star Wars - specifically in the third Original Trilogy film Return of the Jedi - that captured his imagination and inspired his goals as a director:

"I went to the theater again and again to see Return of the Jedi. I vividly remember the scene in which Luke is hiding from Vader in the Emperor's room and Vader gives the speech that ends with 'If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps your sister will.' It was dead quiet. Pin-drop silence. Suddenly Vader has pushed the wrong button. Luke comes screaming out of the shadows and just goes to town in a lightsaber battle against Vader. The way that felt: The forty seconds of stillness from the audience, then the spectacle and emotion, is seared not just in my eyeballs but in my heart..."

deadpool-3-director-star-wars-return-jedi-moment-inspired.jpg
(Photo: Disney)

Levy went on to tease Esquire with exactly how he's now incorporating that scene from Return of the Jedi into Deadpool 3:

"I'm now making Deadpool 3, the production of which was paused because of the actors' strike. For one key scene in the movie, I said to my stunt and action team, 'Guys, this is the Jedi moment.' I pulled up that scene of Vader and Luke on my phone and restudied how it was photographed, how it was blocked, the framing, the tempo. The keen Star Wars fan will see the shot in my Deadpool movie that was inspired by a moment that I saw in a theater decades ago. That's a forever memory. And that's a treasure."

In recent weeks Levy has said a very interesting mix of things about Deadpool 3: he's confirmed the movie is 'very much part of the MCU,' but that it will still have a hard-R rating and the meta-humor that fans of the Deadpool movie franchise expect. At the same time, Levy also says that Deadpool 3 has a "F-kload more" heart than most Marvel fans would expect. If that all wasn't enough, Levy has teased that Deadpool 3 has landed some epic cameos - with many Marvel fans wondering if Taylor Swift isn't going to finally make that appearance as Dazzler.

For now, Deadpool 3 has lost its original release date of Feburary 2024. No new release date has been decided.

Loki: New Posters Showcase Mobius and Hunter B-15's True Selves https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-new-mcu-posters-season-2-episode-5-mobius-hunter-b-15-true-selves/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 20:30:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak ab637b4d-24da-4411-b114-06ff38175ef6

The penultimate episode of Loki's second season, "Science/Fiction," was released on Disney+ last night and saw Loki (Tom Hiddleston) travel across different timelines to meet his friends in their true time and place. It was revealed in the first season that everyone who worked for the TVA was a variant, and now we finally know their stories. Fans were especially excited to learn that Mobius (Owen Wilson) was a jet ski salesman named Don with two sons living in Ohio. It was also revealed that Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) was a doctor named Dr. Willis who was living in New York City in 2012. In honor of these revelations, Marvel Studios has released new posters that showcase Wilson and Mosaku's characters.

"Dedicated workers on any timeline. Episode 5 of Loki Season 2 is now streaming on @DisneyPlus," Marvel shared on Instagram. You can check out the posters below:

Loki Producer Addresses Jet Ski Moment:

Loki producer Kevin Wright recently spoke with Marvel.com about the decision to let Mobius ride a jet ski, which is something fans have been waiting for since the first season.

"We knew in the script [the jet ski] was going to be something funny," Wright told the website. "There was always joke ideas of tags for the end of Season 1 or other things. We knew eventually we were going to have to pay it off, but it was just kind of waiting for the right moment so that it would be its most fulfilling."

"We wanted to find a way to do it in an unexpected way," Wright continued. "I mean, there's been so much anticipation, and I think we could have just plopped him on a jet ski riding around a lake, and people would have been just as happy. Owen said something really funny, which was he compared it a little bit to an old TV romance -- will they, won't they? He's like, well, the second you do it, the thing kind of is done. So he's like, if we're going to do it now, it's got to be really fun and really unexpected."

ComicBook.com's podcast Phase Zero will be recording live episodes every week following Loki season 2's new episodes on Disney+. Each week we will review, break down, and discuss the latest installment of the new Marvel series immediately after the episode's conclusion! The new episodes will be broadcast live on the Phase Zero channel on YouTube before being made available on all major podcast platforms. Loki Season 2 Episode 5 Reveals One Character's Secret Marvel Comics Identity https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-episode-5-secret-marvel-comics-identity-mcu-verity-wills/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 19:33:00 +0000 Aaron Perine dd4ad9f3-6a13-447a-b813-630d59eddc0a

Loki Season 2 Episode 5 managed to reveal one MCU character's secret Marvel Comics identity. On Twitter, user @ImSheWhoRemains zoomed-in and discovered that Hunter B-15's true name is Verity Willis. So, that means she's a fun character from Loki's Marvel Comics adventures. Over in Loki: Agent of Asgard, she travelled with the God of Mischief all over the timeline and helped try to save the world from imminent calamity. Verity's powers in the comics center around being able to see through deceptions and divine the truth. A helpful tool when you're crashing around the Marvel Universe with a Loki variant.

In the comics, Verity also accompanies Loki to the end of time where he was in a struggle with King Loki. (He's an evil variant of the trickster god, by the way.) That's not so dissimilar from the plot of the Disney+ Loki show so far. However, what awaits Loki at the end of all this conflict might not be a glaring version of himself... but rather a more sinister figure. Verity's appearance in an MCU show also highlights a Marvel Studios penchant for nodding to the comics around the edges without anyone saying the character's name on-screen. Remixing is as much a part of The MCU DNA as the fanfare at the beginning of these programs or the post-credits scenes.

Life "Before" The TVA Was Different

Seeing things and meeting people we've met before is the entire vibe of Loki Season 2 Episode 5. The production designer for the series talked to Marvel.com about recreating O.B.'s workshop in his own timeline. Kasran Farahani says that he wanted the viewers to feel that creeping feeling of things being familiar but also unique. Think like deja-vu. So, for all of our time-displaced friends, there are familiar elements to their stories like Hunter B-15 being a helper in her other life.

"I think that was something throughout the episode we were talking about you wanted it to just feel like you're home with these characters, but truly uncanny in the true sense of the word," Executive Producer Kevin Wright said during the piece. "It's home-like, and that is what makes it feel familiar, but also potentially really odd. A lot of that was trying to capture, again-- and this was a through line in Season 1, bringing it through here-- a little bit of that Wizard of Oz feel of, its home, but it's not. It's filled with familiar faces, but they're not the people that you know."

Loki Season 2's Conclusion Is On The Way

Marvel's Echo Trailer Reveals What Happened To Kingpin After Hawkeye https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-mcu-echo-trailer-reveals-what-happened-to-kingpin-after-hawkeye/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 18:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e5357e8f-2c8d-48d3-bba6-ee011aa66204

The first trailer for Marvel Studios' Echo was released today, and it teased the return of Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) in addition to Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox). Both D'Onofrio and Cox first played their characters in Netflix's Daredevil, which is not considered part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, they have both been seen in the MCU and are soon getting their own reboot, Daredevil: Born Again, which recently had some shakeups. No one was surprised to see either actor in the new Echo trailer as they were both previously announced as cast members, but some fans have been wondering about Fisk's fate after Maya shot him at the end of Hawkeye.

Although Maya shot Fisk point blank at the end of Hawkeye, no one actually believed the character to be dead. First of all, he didn't die onscreen, which is a pretty big indicator that he would be coming back. Second, Fisk does get shot in a similar way in the comics and survives. Daredevil (Vol. 2) #15 ends with Maya confronting Fisk and shooting him in the head for killing her father. The villain survives but loses his vision for a time. The trailer for Echo jumps around in time, opening with a flashback to Maya's childhood. However, there is a moment in the trailer that sees Fisk talking to Maya while wearing a single eye patch. We can assume that the show decided to follow up the shooting by only damaging one of Fisk's eyes. He's back and he's looking as dangerous than ever.

What Is Echo About?

You can read Marvel Studios' description of Echo here: "Marvel Studios presents Echo in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) aka Kingpin. In the first episode we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles," the synopsis reads.

In addition to Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, the cast of Echo includes Chaske Spencer as Henry, Tantoo Cardinal as Chula, Graham Greene as Skully, Cody Lightning as Cousin Biscuits, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Devery Jacobs as Bonnie, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez.

Marvel Releases New Kingpin Echo Poster https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-echo-kingpin-vincent-donofrio-poster-mcu/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 17:47:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 6bc7852a-11fc-4f48-a0e5-ff52adfc5133

Echo's big trailer is here, and Marvel just release a new poster for the Disney+ series featuring Kingpin. In the first clips from the show, Vincent D'Onofrio's bruising villain is front and center. Clearly, Maya Lopez still has a score to settle with Kingpin during the Echo show. In the poster, she's out on the road and looking for answers. In a cool touch, D'Onforio's eyepatch forms the sun hanging over the landscape. With some cool colors in tow, Echo is definitely a title that more Marvel fans are looking forward to in the coming months. Having Charlie Cox's Daredevil pop-up and Kingpin as a big bad will certainly help in that regard. Take a peek down below!

Young Maya was having a hard time talking to a street vendor in the trailer for Echo. When the guy ends up being more rude than necessary, "Uncle" Kingpin swoops in to deliver the pain and Maya looks on from the sidelines. Director and producer Sydney Freeland spoke to the collected press about the presence of the Marvel villain recently.

"I will say very large," Freeland explained. "Yeah. It's one of the core relationships in the entire series, the relationship between Kingpin and Maya. And we'll come to sort of find out that he becomes a kind of surrogate father to her," she added. "It's one of the core relationships in the entire series, I'll say that much."

Echo's Gritty Tone Comes Into Full-Focus

From the tone of that first trailer, it's clear that Echo producer Stephen Broussard wasn't lying when he mentioned a grounded tone. This clip solidified interest for some people that might have ben on the fence with Echo. (Despite there being nothing to base those opinions on but rumors on the Internet.) Still, Marvel Studios has yielded a true TV-MA show that certain sections of the fanbase have been clamoring for over the last few years. The producer teased more to come!

"[Production on 'Echo'] is going well. It's very different. Like, talking about Werewolf by Night to this. It's a very different tonal sort of thing. I don't want to say too much because there's not a whole lot out there in the world, but it feels very grounded, it feels very spiritual in ways that feel fresh for us," Broussard told Collider. "Alaqua as the lead is incredibly compelling. I'm sort of hard-pressed to think of something that it feels like outside in the broader realm of the MCU, let alone within what we've done here. So stay tuned on that really cool stuff."

What Happens In Echo?

echo-alaqua-cox.jpg

Here's how Marvel Studios' describes Echo: "Marvel Studios presents Echo in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) aka Kingpin. In the first episode we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles."

Along with Alaqua Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio, Echo's cast also includes Chaske Spencer as Henry, Tantoo Cardinal as Chula, Graham Greene as Skully, Cody Lightning as Cousin Biscuits, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Devery Jacobs as Bonnie, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez.

Marvel's Echo Trailer Includes Sneaky Reference to Netflix's Daredevil Show https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/echo-trailer-daredevil-kingpin-painting-tease/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 17:25:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt baf3a07f-8c6e-4d4b-9354-6e9b445bc696

The first teaser trailer for Marvel's Echo has arrived, taking fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe back on a journey into street-level storytelling. At least for this show, gone are the days of multiversal threats and journeys across the cosmos and instead, a Marvel series will examine humanity in what appears to be a show with a microscopic scale. The tone of the trailer closely rivals that previously seen in the DefendersVerse, and it even includes a pretty direct reference to Netflix's Daredevil series.

In a blink and you'll miss it moment, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) can be seen looking at a painting on the wall. While a man of Kingpin's stature admiring art isn't all too rare in its own right, it does seem like a direct connection to Daredevil given how integral paintings were to the development of Kingpin as a character.

Immediately after murdering his abusive father, a young Kingpin couldn't help but stare at the closest wall, a blank one painted white. A grown Kingpin then bought "Rabbit in a Snowstorm" from Vanessa Marianna, his eventual partner, because the painting reminded him of the traumatic moment. The villain can be seen several times throughout the series just standing and staring at the painting.

While the painting in the Echo trailer isn't "Rabbit in a Snowstorm," its monotonous tones are comparable to its predecessors, and the moment does seem to be a link between the two properties and the return of the Kingpin of Crime.

"I dunno if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil, it's great," Echo producer Sydney Freeland shared at a press event earlier this month when asked if the intent of Echo was to follow the Defenderverse.

Every episode of Echo will be released both on Disney+ and Hulu simultaneously on January 10, 2024.

Marvel's Echo Trailer Includes a Blink and You'll Miss it Daredevil Cameo https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-echo-trailer-daredevil-cameo-mcu/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 17:09:00 +0000 Timothy Adams a05f44c2-48c5-4f78-9a5e-fc10dca86744

Daredevil makes a "blink-and-you-miss-it" appearance in the first trailer for Marvel's Echo. The gritty, action-packed drama series follows Alaqua Coxl's Maya Lopez, aka Echo, following the events of Hawkeye. The Hawkeye finale saw Echo get revenge on Wilson Fisk \ Kingpin, played by the returning Vincent D'Onofrio, who was responsible for the death of her father. Kingpin was like another father figure for Echo, helping to groom her into the woman she is today. Echo is tied to Wilson Fisk and his rival, Daredevil, in the comics, and there have been rumors and reports that Daredevil will make an appearance in Echo as well. The release of the first Echo trailer seems to confirm those rumors.

At around the 1:27 mark of the Echo trailer, we can see someone leaping away from an attacker. The person diving has the same mask and costume as Daredevil, and the person he is trying to get away from could be Echo. A rumor from back in July 2022 stated Daredevil's Netflix cohort Jessica Jones would also play a role in his appearance. One of the reported plotlines in Echo deals with Daredevil, whose secret identity is attorney Matt Murdock, searching for a former ally, who happens to be Jessica Jones. Krysten Ritter portrayed the private investigator across two seasons of Jessica Jones on Netflix, along with The Defenders event miniseries, and Luke Cage. While Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio have already appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, respectively, Echo could offer an avenue for Ritter to reprise her Jessica Jones role as well.

Echo director confirms showdown with Daredevil

Along with having the Daredevil sighting in Echo's first trailer, the show's director and executive producer Sydney Freeland teased a showdown between Echo and the Devil of Hell's Kitchen during ComicBook.com's presence at a trailer event for Echo.

"I dunno if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil, it's great," Freeland shared when asked if Echo will follow the Defenderverse.

All five episodes of Echo premiere January 10th on Disney+ and Hulu.

Echo: Marvel Series Will Have Nods To Netflix's Daredevil https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/echo-mcu-disney-plus-hulu-will-have-nods-to-netflix-daredevil-defenderverse/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 16:33:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak c941e521-b2c3-45d8-a91b-1a169b5f7faa

Echo is heading to Disney+ and Hulu in January, and the new Marvel Studios show is expected to be a spinoff of Hawkeye. The 2021 series introduced Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) and focused on her relationship with her "uncle," Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio). D'Onofrio's Kingpin was first introduced in Netflix's Daredevil series alongside Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil. It's been confirmed that both actors will appear in Echo ahead of their own reboot, Daredevil: Born Again, which recently had some shakeups. ComicBook.com attended a trailer event for Echo, and director and executive producer Sydney Freeland confirmed that Echo is a villain, and teased a showdown with Daredevil.

"I dunno if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil, it's great," Freeland shared when asked if the intent of Echo was to follow the Defenderverse. "And so we certainly took, obviously the Daredevil fight, it was a little bit of a nod to that series ... But then also we wanted very adamantly to show that these are people in our show. So I guess to answer your question, it was a conversation, but it wasn't that reason."

Echo is being released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10. The show will leave Hulu on April 9th.

Loki's Marvel Theme Remix Was Last Minute Change https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-marvel-theme-remix-last-minute-change-mcu/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 16:25:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 7da96ab1-2d6a-4b68-82da-82bf671b8c4b

One of the many surprising and entertaining elements of Loki has been its musical score. Episode 3 of the Disney+ Original Series kicked things off with a remix of the Marvel Studios theme music, to fit in with the episode's 1893 timeline. Loki has carved out a nice niche in Marvel's TV catalog, as it continues to push the boundaries of the multiverse with Tom Hiddleston's God of Mischief making for a fine lead character. As for the creatives behind the camera, one got to talk about how they went about crafting the music behind Loki.

ComicBook.com spoke to Loki composer Natalie Holt, who was asked what it was like to play with Loki's musical score. "I did the umpire music with the Loki theme and played in that scene, and Episode 3 the music was kinda honky tonky, and it started with that string quartet at the beginning... it's like such a different sound palette," Holt said. "And then as we worked on the show I had the idea of the score playing and a piano in the background of the He Who Remains speech that he does with the machine that he's built."

She then discussed how she got to remix the iconic Marvel theme music. "And then a really late honor, 'How about we do a new version of the Marvel logo with a piano?' And everyone was like, 'Try it.' And it stuck." She then praised Peter Nichols, who worked on the score as well on Loki Seasons 1 and 2. You can watch Natalie Holt's interview in the player above.

Loki Season 2 premiered with lower ratings than Season 1

According to the latest streaming data from Nielsen, Loki's second season premiere saw a significant drop from the series premiere back in 2021. The company's new numbers reveal that the Loki Season 2 premiere from October 5th rounded up 446 million minutes of viewing time over its first three days on Disney+. The first season premiere pulled in roughly 731 million minutes of viewing time, based on Nielsen's metrics. That's a 39% drop from Season 1 to Season 2.

There are obviously multiple things potentially attributing to that drop, including the fact that the first season of Loki was one of the first MCU projects to be released after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. 2023 has also seen a couple of poorly reviewed projects from Marvel Studios, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the Secret Invasion series, which may have caused less interest in the overall franchise.

Loki Production Designer Reveals How OB's Time-Wiped Lab Looks So Different in Episode 5 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-tva-ob-mcu-marvel-production-designer-episode-5/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 16:13:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 6cb10da6-d184-4b8a-a6b5-6117ac38cc0d

Loki's latest episode revealed O.B.'s workspace on his original timeline. In the TVA, Ke Huy Quan's character is the designer of every single gadget they use. Marvel.com caught up with production designer Kasra Farahani to talk about some of the engineer's design influences. Viewers got to see A.D. Doug's humble beginnings as a professor and science fiction author. However, he also tinkers on the side, in a room that looks strikingly similar to the Research and Development room in the TVA. That's not on accident according to the production designer.

"It occurred to me that this could be an opportunity for a really fun gag," Farahani explained. "In my mind, when O.B. was brought from the timeline, he'd spent so much time in his real-world workspace, that however much brain wiping was done, the architecture of this space was just so deeply ingrained in the fiber of his mind. When he redesigned R&A in the TVA, he unwittingly recreated that space."

"I think that was something throughout the episode we were talking about you wanted it to just feel like you're home with these characters, but truly uncanny in the true sense of the word," Executive Producer Kevin Wright chimed-in.

Loki Addresses Mobius' Past Too

During Episode 5, Loki decided to give us extended information about all the different variants that we've followed through the TVA. Producer Kevin Wright spoke to Marvel.com about Mobius's life back on the timeline. Episode 5 finally delivered the jet ski action that fans have been craving. The viewers have been asking for Owen Wilson's character to get to ride a personal watercraft since Loki Season 1. On Wednesday evening, they finally got their wish. The executive seems ecstatic about it too.

"We knew in the script [the jet ski] was going to be something funny," Wright revealed. "There was always joke ideas of tags for the end of Season 1 or other things. We knew eventually we were going to have to pay it off, but it was just kind of waiting for the right moment so that it would be its most fulfilling."

"We wanted to find a way to do it in an unexpected way," he added.

Loki Season 2 Has More Surprises In Store

Echo to Release on Disney+ and Hulu Simultaneously https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/echo-mcu-to-release-on-disney-plus-and-hulu-simultaneously-january/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 16:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 4e4e5074-7e47-4542-b2bc-1dcf6e179a0d

Echo is Marvel Studio's next series and it will serve as a spinoff to Hawkeye. The show follows Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she "struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) AKA Kingpin." The first trailer for the series was released today, and it was revealed that it will be the first Marvel Studios series to be released on Disney+ and Hulu simultaneously.

Unlike the Marvel Studios series that were previously released on Disney+, the entire first season of Echo will be released in one day. However, the binge model isn't the only thing that makes the series unique. In addition to also being released on Hulu, Echo will be rated TV-MA, which means fans can expect some violence akin to the Marvel shows that were previously released on Netflix. Echo drops on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10th.

"I grew up reading the comics and not everything is mainline Avengers giant, epic storytelling," executive producer Brad Winderbaum recently told members of the press at a trailer event for Echo. "What's exciting to us is to tell smaller, intimate character stories, too. And Echo is a huge opportunity for us to do that. It is the story of Maya Lopez, who is an indigenous motorcycle-riding, gun-toting ... She's deaf, she wears a prosthetic leg, she's an amazing martial artist, and she has an incredible history, and our team has brought a lot of depth to her character in this series."

He continued. "It's our first TV-MA show, so it's a little on the grittier side for Marvel. And I think again, shows kind of the breadth of what Marvel's capable of. And certainly something, again, if you know the comics and know the history, it feels very in line, but is kind of a new direction for the brand, especially on Disney+. And to that end, it's going to be, for many reasons, going to be simultaneously released on Disney+ and Hulu."

In addition to Alaqua Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio, the cast of Echo includes Chaske Spencer as Henry, Tantoo Cardinal as Chula, Graham Greene as Skully, Cody Lightning as Cousin Biscuits, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Devery Jacobs as Bonnie, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez.

Echo is being released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10. The show will leave Hulu on April 9th.

Echo Director Confirms Maya Lopez Is a Villain and Won't Have Her Comics Powers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/echo-mcu-director-confirms-maya-lopez-villain-wont-have-marvel-comics-powers-daredevil-fight/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 16:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 89c3d989-69ac-4810-8c15-6eee95f50d10

Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) was first introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of the main antagonists in Hawkeye. The character was looking to avenge her father who she believed was killed by Ronin, Hawkeye's (Jeremy Renner) alter ego. At the end of the season, Maya learns her father's death was organized by her "uncle," Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) and she ends up shooting him. Today, the first trailer for the Echo spinoff was released, and it teases the origin of Echo and Kingpin's relationship. In the comics, Echo is a villain with the ability to mimic anyone's fighting style. ComicBook.com recently attended a trailer event for the series, and director and executive producer Sydney Freeland confirmed that while Echo is a villain, she won't have the same powers from the comics.

"We wanted something that, again, if you're coming off of Hawkeye, and you have to keep in mind she's a villain," Freeland explained. "She's a villain. And so tonally, we wanted to lean into that. I think in talking with the executives and our approach, and when building visual style, it was sort of like, 'Oh yeah, lean into that, lean into that.'"

Freeland added, "Yeah, so her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It's kind of lame, I will say that is not her power [in the show] and I'll just kind of leave it at that."

Echo Trailer Released By Marvel, Reveals Focus on Maya Lopez and Kingpin https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/echo-trailer-released-marvel-reveals-mcu-focus-maya-lopez-kingpin-daredevil/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 16:02:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak d7ab6365-3085-4a3d-a7ae-b4ddb7b2a91c

There are still Marvel Cinematic Universe projects set to be released this year, including the finale of Loki's second season on Disney+ and The Marvels in theaters. The Hawkeye spinoff Echo was originally scheduled to be released in November, but now it's set to be the first MCU project of 2024. Coming in January, the show is scheduled to be the first Marvel show on Disney+ to get released all at once, and it follows Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) and her rise to villainy as she attempts to follow in the footsteps of her "Uncle," Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio). Today, Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Echo, and it teases Maya's relationship with Kingpin.

The trailer sees young Maya struggling to communicate with a street vendor due to her deafness. The vendor is extremely rude to her, which was a big mistake because Maya's "Uncle" Kingpin was watching the interaction from the sidelines. The trailer teases Kingpin's influence on Maya, and how he will help set her on her path. You can watch the trailer below:

"I will say very large," Echo director and executive producer Sydney Freeland told members of the press when asked about Kingpin's presence throughout the series. "Yeah. It's one of the core relationships in the entire series, the relationship between Kingpin and Maya. And we'll come to sort of find out that he becomes a kind of surrogate father to her," she added. "It's one of the core relationships in the entire series, I'll say that much."

According to Echo producer Stephen Broussard, the series will be one of Marvel's most grounded entries yet.

"[Production on 'Echo'] is going well. It's very different. Like, talking about Werewolf by Night to this. It's a very different tonal sort of thing. I don't want to say too much because there's not a whole lot out there in the world, but it feels very grounded, it feels very spiritual in ways that feel fresh for us," he explained. "Alaqua as the lead is incredibly compelling. I'm sort of hard-pressed to think of something that it feels like outside in the broader realm of the MCU, let alone within what we've done here. So stay tuned on that really cool stuff."

Echo is now set to hit Disney+ and Hulu on January 10.

Will Loki Become the MCU's New He Who Remains In Season 2 Finale? https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-season-2-episode-6-finale-new-he-who-remains-time-loop-mcu-theory/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 14:57:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 4b3ca189-c8ca-4f71-9e53-ee0dd5f51ec4

Loki Season 2 Episode 5 had the monumental task of delivering something epic after that game-changing cliffhanger ending to Episode 4. The TVA was lost in an explosion of time and reality as the Temporal Loom ruptured before Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Mobius (Owen Wilson), Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors), and co. could all execute the plan to expand the loom's scope and preserve the surviving branch timelines of the multiverse.

(SPOILERS) In Loki Season 2's penultimate episode "Science/Fiction", Loki finds himself time slipping again, while stuck in the vacant headquarters of the TVA. As reality starts to turn into spaghetti around him, Loki slips away into different branch timelines where his friends from the TVA have all been returned to their home realities and lives. After a classic heist-style mission to 'get the band back together' Loki and Co. once again find out they are too late to stop all reality from going spaghetti - until Loki shocks himself by finally controlling his time slips and warps away from annihilation to once again give himself a chance to fix the multiverse.

Will Loki Become The MCU's New He Who Remains?

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

While Loki Season 2 Episode 5 may not feel as epic as some hoped, it does have some notable connections to the Loki Season 1 finale and the debut of He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors).

The first thing a lot of fans are pointing out is how Loki's time slipping - especially the controlled version - looks a lot like the powers that He Who Remains displayed when he first met Loki and Sylvie. While it was technology-based and looked like super-speed or teleportation, He Who Remains explained that his Temp-Pad had been loaded with data of how his meeting with Sylvie and Loki would play out - keeping him one step ahead at all times. It now seems clear that He Who Remains harnessed time slipping as a force and weapon that helped him both harness the time beast Alioth to win the Multiversal War.

Even more telling was the proclamation that He Who Remains gave to Loki and Sylvie. He claimed that even though he knew how events would play out, Loki and Sylvie needed to go on the journey to reshape their characters into what was needed. Finally, he offered them a simple choice: kill him or take his place.

...But maybe the choice wasn't so simple, after all?

He Who Remains framed it as a choice of one thing or another - but with two people present, maybe it was always about both choices being made. Sylvie chooses to kill He Who Remains, while Loki (having completed the necessary journey and growth in both character and powers) will end up taking his place.

Avengers: Secret Wars MVP

A lot of MCU fans have theorized that Tom Hiddleston's Loki will turn out to be the true MVP of the big Multiverse Saga culmination in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. How exactly Loki was going to show up to give the heroes the push they needed has been unclear... until now, perhaps. If Loki masters the power of time slipping and essentially becomes the new He Who Remains, he also becomes the one person with the x-factor power to fight back against the Council of Kangs and whatever dark new reality they may create. Theory: in the end, Loki gives the role of He Who Remains back to a surviving Kang variant, who becomes the He Who Remains we know - providing the very "reincarnation" He Who Remains foretold of before Sylvie killed him. That's the kind of time-looping that Loki's storyline has been all about.

It will also give Loki Season 2 and its smaller-scale, more character-focused storyline true meaning, and relevance to the larger MCU Multiverse Saga, which is something fans need to see by the time Episode 6 is over.

Loki Producer Explains Mobius Jet Ski Scene https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-mcu-loki-mobius-jet-ski-producer-explains/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 14:21:00 +0000 Aaron Perine a7a69638-6161-40ba-96ce-6595efd3b108

Loki finally gave Mobius a Jet Ski and fans are over the moon with the reveals in Season 2 Episode 5. Loki producer Kevin Wright told Marvel.com about the decision to finally let Owen Wilson's character sit upon his chariot. Over the course of the Disney+ series, Mobius has mentioned jet skis a lot, and ti was finally time to reveal his origin story in Episode 5. Viewers learn that he worked at Piranna Powersports in Cleveland, Ohio selling personal watercraft. Wright and the creative team felt like giving fans a happy moment after all the intensity last week was very important. While Mobius wasn't out on the water, it was a fun scene for fans who have been asking for exactly that kind of nod since Season 1 of Loki. Here's what the producer had to say.

"We knew in the script [the jet ski] was going to be something funny," the Executive Producer told the website. "There was always joke ideas of tags for the end of Season 1 or other things. We knew eventually we were going to have to pay it off, but it was just kind of waiting for the right moment so that it would be its most fulfilling."

"We wanted to find a way to do it in an unexpected way," Wright would continue.

Loki Season 2's Best Is Still To Come

According to Loki cinematographer Isaac Bauman, the final episode was "the most meaningful day" on-set. So, he told ComicBook.com to emotionally prepare for these final two episodes. Loki has really been on this massive journey throughout the two seasons. The fact that everyone associated with the show marks the finale so highly should encourage viewers before taking that final leap. Episode 5 did little to dull expectations as the praise is all over social media. Check out what the cinematographer said right here.

"We shot the climactic sequence of the season, at least a major piece of it, the significant piece, on a single day, on a sound stage very near the end of our shoot," Bauman revealed during our interview. "I think it was probably the most meaningful day of the whole production because you could feel just the weight of this story, Loki's story, which has gone on for so long, closing this chapter at least."

"It felt like once we're finished shooting this sequence, we as a crew, as creatives, we have now contributed a very significant chapter in the story of one of the greatest characters of our generation," Bauman continued. "It actually felt that way on set, which is incredible."

What's Hiding In That Finale?

LOKI, Season 2
(Photo: Marvel Studios)

With all that forward momentum, people involved with Loki are saying that Episode 6 will top the explosive Episode 4 and the catharsis of Episode 5. Producer Kevin Wright sat down with Marvel.com to discuss the critical finale episode of the Disney+ series. Episodes 5 has some pretty big reveals and the footage from the most recent trailer is almost all used up. Wright explained how there were even more surprises laying beneath the surface.

"What we always like to do in all of the scripts, and in all of our storytelling, is that thing you think is going to happen in Episode 6, or could happen in the finale or towards the end, what happens if we move that forward? What if we just accelerate all of the storytelling, hit it early," Wright shared.

"I think that's the beauty of Episodes 5 and 6. If people liked Episode 4, I genuinely think 5 and 6 are maybe the two best episodes of the series," Wright mentioned. "They're beautiful and they're profound. They're deeply moving. And we only get to go there because of that story acceleration."

Loki Season 2 Charges Toward A Conclusion?

Black Widow and Hawkeyes Series Announced by Marvel https://comicbook.com/comics/news/black-widow-hawkeyes-60th-anniversary-marvel-series-mcu/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 13:31:00 +0000 Timothy Adams b60deddd-7a9b-4a92-a9a5-437abccd4492

Marvel is celebrating the 60th anniversaries of Black Widow and Hawkeye with a new team-up series. The duo of superheroes are cornerstones of the Avengers after starting their comic careers as villains. Black Widow and Hawkeye have only had to rely on their natural abilities, compared to their super-powered allies like Thor, Hulk, and Spider-Man. Black Widow recently got a power upgrade thanks to an acquired Venom symbiote, but her next adventure will be alongside Hawkeye in a new limited series celebrating the duo's big anniversary.

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski announced Black Widow & Hawkeye during an appearance at the Lucca Comics & Games festival in Italy. The four-issue limited series comes from writer Stephanie Phillips (Contest of Chaos, Cosmic Ghost Rider) and artist Paolo Villanelli (Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest). Both Hawkeye and Black Widow's past will be explored, which is filled with secrets and espionage, but will also address Black Widow and her new symbiote.

"THE EYES OF A HAWK AND THE VENOM OF A WIDOW! Even when Black Widow and Hawkeye had no one to trust, they still had each other - even though their paths sometimes diverged," the description of Black Widow & Hawkeye reads. "So when Clint Barton is accused of a rogue assassination attempt that puts the U.S. and Madripoor at odds, a symbiote-equipped Natasha Romanoff thinks nothing of coming to his aid. But as echoes of their past ripple into the present, it will take all their faith in each other - and the lessons learned along the way - to protect their futures.

"I love getting the chance to dig deep with Natasha Romanov and Clint Barton to tell a fast-paced spy story that celebrates their 60th anniversary," Phillips shared. "Nothing is as it seems, and I'm having a ton of fun writing these characters. Not to mention they both look great for 60."

Black Widow joins Marvel's Thunderbolts

Marvel announced a new volume of Thunderbolts back in July, led by the Winter Soldier. It's a continuation of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing's Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, with Bucky Barnes assembling a team of black ops heavy hitters to take down some of the Marvel Universe's biggest villains like Red Skull and Doctor Doom. Joining Black Widow on Thunderbolts are Sharon Carter AKA Destroyer, White Widow, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, and Shang-Chi.

The official description of Thunderbolts reads, "Bucky Barnes, the Revolution, just inherited a mountain of covert intel and he has one objective: justice... like lightning! He's going after the establishment, the people no one else is willing or able to take down, and he'll do whatever it takes to win. Teaming with the mysterious Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine, Bucky assembles a team of black-ops heavy hitters to pursue high-profile targets like the Red Skull, Kingpin and even Doctor Doom himself. No one is safe from the Thunderbolts!"

Written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Paolo Villanelli and a cover by Stephen Segovia, Black Widow & Hawkeye #1 goes on sale March 13, 2024.

Loki: What Is the Song in Season 2 Episode 5? https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-what-song-season-2-episode-5-mcu-velvet-underground/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 04:48:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 61d0dd5a-2ac1-46d8-9e05-aedc6b73ca26

Loki's sophomore season is almost entirely in the books, and so far it has remained one of the most unique entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This season's penultimate episode, in particular, has delivered some surprising character beats for nearly every member of Loki's ensemble -- and it has showcased a unique sense of style along the way. One particular detail in Episode 5, a song playing during a key moment, further proved that. Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 5 of Loki, "Science/Fiction", below! Only look if you want to know!

The episode concerned Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his latest bout of timeslipping, which was brought on after the TVA's Temporal Loom seemingly exploded. As Loki jumped across time and space, he eventually ended up in a branched timeline where Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) has developed a normal human life working at a 1980s McDonald's. After debating with Loki about free will, Sylvie goes to a local record store, which proceeds to spiral out of existence as all wayward timelines have done under the TVA's Fail-Safe Protocol. The song that accompanies this scene is The Velvet Undergound's "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'", a beloved track off of their 1970 album Loaded.

Loki Season 2: What Is the Fail-Safe Protocol in Episode 5? https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-what-is-fail-safe-protocol-episode-5-mcu/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 03:48:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson e2b0e549-c986-43c9-8572-60c4692c9f66

We're nearly through with Loki's sophomore season, which has been taking the Marvel Cinematic Universe on quite a journey. The show has not only tried to expand upon the mythos of Loki (Tom Hiddleston), but of the Time Variance Authority. That included one major reveal about how the TVA itself works -- the Fail-Safe Protocol, which made a deadly impact across the episode. So, what exactly is the TVA's Fail-Safe Protocol? Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 5 of Loki below! Only look if you want to know!

The major thread of the episode involved Loki dealing with the fallout of the Temporal Loom's explosion, which scattered his friends across time and space and made his timeslipping significantly worse. Early on in the episode, we saw one side-effect of that explosion -- the Fail-Safe Protocol had been automatically activated by the TVA, causing everything in the facility to slowly spin out into nothingness. While this wasn't the first time we've seen this "spaghetting", as Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors) died in a similar fashion in Episode 4, we began to see its impact across the episode. Branched timelines, and the people within them, began to be erased -- including the timeline where Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) had found a happy life at McDonald's, and later the timeline where O.B. (Ke Huy Quan) hosted the team at his base of operations. While Loki is not seemingly able to stop the spaghetting altogether, he can now better control his timeslipping and go back to before the protocol was initiated.

Will Loki Get a Season 3?

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Loki producer Kevin Wright addressed the possibility of whether or not the show could end up getting a third season -- and teased that either way, the narrative of the show will continue in the larger franchise.

"We are certainly thinking about how we can continue to tell TVA and Loki-based stories," Wright revealed. "What I would say is season one and season two were always conceived as two chapters of the same book. We want to close this book and I think there's a lot more books on the shelf, though."

Loki Season 2 Calls Back to Marvel's The Avengers With Key Scene https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-avengers-easter-egg-battle-new-york-2012-mcu/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 03:32:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely ee02827c-8cf0-4011-97c7-3c8fe2f9ef67

The Loki we're seeing right now on Disney+ is very different from the one that first appeared as a dastardly villain in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Hiddleston's beloved character is trying to rewrite the story on his self-titled TV series, but his early days in the franchise were spent working for Thanos, attacking the Avengers, and trying to harness the power of the Infinity Stones. Thursday's penultimate episode of Loki Season 2 dropped a reference to that period in the God of Mischief's existence, including a big nod to Marvel's The Avengers and the Battle of New York.

WARNING: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the latest episode of Loki! Continue reading at your own risk...

After the big reset at the end of last week's episode of Loki, the penultimate episode began with the God of Mischief hopping through time and across timelines, appearing in times where all of his TVA friends had been scattered. We got to see where on the timelines all of the variants came from, and Hunter B-15's location immediately stole the attention of longtime Marvel fans.

On one of the branched timelines, B-15 could be found in New York City in the year 2012. Of course, that was the exact place and year Loki invaded Earth with the Mind Stone.

B-15 was a doctor, working with a child who had broken her arm. There was no indication that the Battle of New York had happened or was about to happen in the scene, especially since she didn't recognize Loki when he visited for the first time. Considering it was a branched timeline, rather than the Sacred Timeline, there may not have ever been a Battle of New York where B-15 was from.

Loki Season 2 Finale

Over the last two weeks, Loki has certainly set itself up for an unbelievable finale. Natalie Holt, the show's composer, recently spoke to ComicBook.com and said she "can't wait" for everyone to see how Season 2 comes to a close.

"I can't wait for people to see Episode 6," Holt told us recently. "And, for me, it was the most, just satisfying thing to write. Yeah, I just felt, I feel kind of like so emotionally tied up with the character. Because I've been working on th show for such a long time now. What it feels like. And, you know, what happens to Loki, I feel like I go on this journey with him every time I worked on a season. So, I just feel... Yeah, it was sort of sad to say goodbye and I didn't want to stop working on it. Yeah, it feels... I can't.... Yeah. All I can say is I can't wait for people to see it."

Marvel's Loki Has New Powers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-loki-mcu-new-powers-season-2/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 02:24:00 +0000 Spencer Perry c3e5a617-c927-483d-b697-853531fd31b6

When Loki season 2 started on Disney+, the title character already had a major problem, he was time-slipping. Having become unstuck from his present timeline in the first episode, and partially as a result of so many timeline branches being woven into the Sacred Timeline, Loki was slipping between past and present in a violent fashion that looked like it was painful. After the jaw-dropping events of Loki season 2 episode 4 though, the Marvel series brought back the time-slipping concept and even built on it in a big way, expanding Loki's powerset and potentially making him one of the MCU's most powerful characters.

Loki season 2 episode 5 ending explained:

Loki season 2's latest episode on Disney+ begins from the events of last week's episode, but this time Loki is once again time-slipping. To make things a little wilder he's not just showing up at the TVA, though he does begin his journey there. Loki's time-slipping in the new episode sends him across branched timelines where he encounters many of his cohorts and collaborators in the TVA, revealing what their lives were like before they joined the TVA, including: Casey is a prisoner escaping from Alcatraz in 1961, Hunter B-15 is a doctor living in New York in 2012, OB is a failed science-fiction author in California in the 1990s, and Mobius is a jet-ski salesman in Cleveland in the present day.

After encountering OB and explaining everything to him, including how random time-slipping has been for him, Ke Huy Quan's science-obsessed brain offers a revelation about it: Loki's time-slipping isn't random, it's been pushing him around to all the people that he's looking for. Loki just needs to learn to control his time-slipping, especially since it's getting better at moving not only through time, but also space, essentially making Loki a walking TemPad. Knowing the threat that lingers though is what is driving Loki, and that is what will drive him to control his time-slipping

Guess what? At the end of this episode of Loki, that's exactly what happens. As the timeline that Loki and all of his TVA pals are sitting in begins to spaghettify, he screams out in anguish and manages to take control of the time-slipping for the first time.

"It's not about where, when, or why, it's about who," Loki says to his friends.

He adds, "I can rewrite the story," taking control of his power and slipping back in time exactly to the moment in season 2 episode 4 right before Victor Timely walks out of the TVA and perishes.

With this newfound ability, Loki is clearly one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most powerful characters. Not only can he go back in time and change things, he seemingly has no limit to how far back he can go and what he can do. This will no doubt play a big part in the Loki season 2 finale which premieres next week, but what's unclear is how this will position Loki in the larger MCU. Marvel Studios has often shied away from characters that they've made a little TOO powerful, so the potential for Loki to get sidelined until a much later appearance seems likely.

Marvel Studios fan-favorite Tom Hiddleston stars in Loki Season 2, returning as the titular God of Mischief for another round of time-traveling hijinx on Disney+. Loki Season 2 Reveals Heartbreaking Truth About Mobius' Past https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-episode-5-mobius-past-timeline-mcu/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 01:48:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 0e694955-5ea0-4414-a379-0730930e62a7

The fourth episode of Loki Season 2 flipped the script on the entire series, essentially destroying the TVA and leaving all of the show's major characters scattered throughout the various timelines. In this week's penultimate episode of the season, fans got to see where each of those characters "belonged" on the various timelines. That includes Mobius, the fan-favorite character played by Owen Wilson. There have always been theories about where he originally came from and what sort of life he had outside of the TVA, and now we have a heartbreaking answer. WARNING: This article contain MAJOR SPOILERS for the latest episode of Loki! Continue reading at your own risk...

Loki, able to hop through space and time, spends the episode tracking down each of his TVA friends on their own timelines. Mobius, as many fans hoped and suspected, is found selling jet-skis. It's also revealed that this version of the character is a single dad with two young sons at home that he takes care of. This is where the heartbreaking element of Mobius' story comes in.

In order to help Loki save the TVA and stop the timelines from collapsing, he has to leave his sons behind. It's unclear if this is the exact same scenario that the original Mobius faced when he was taken into the TVA, or if this is perhaps the exact same variant of the character and we're witnessing an even bigger time loop.

Loki tells Mobius that he can come back to visit his sons at any point, bringing him back to that exact moment in time, but there's no telling if that ever actually happens. And if this is truly the only version of Mobius involved with the TVA, would reuniting with his sons mean he would never see his friend Loki again?

Loki wakes up after the Temporal Loom explosion, discovering that everyone else has disappeared. He walks through the empty TVA headquarters, and begins timeslipping again, which he is unhappy about. He briefly finds a man reading the TVA manual, but timeslips before he can approach him -- and later realizes that the man is actually a version of himself, from slightly forward in the future. The TVA begins to disintegrate into strings of time, as the organization's "fail safe" mode is initiated.

Casey ends up in a jail cell, where he and two men try to orchestrate a prison break. The prison is in a branched timeline at Alcatraz in 1962 San Francisco. Loki finds Casey, but he doesn't recognize him, and he goes by Frank. They begin to escape in a boat, and Loki timeslips away anyway. Loki continues to timeslip -- to McDonald's, to a jet ski store, and to the TVA's time theater. Hunter B-15 is in a branched timeline in a hospital in 2012 New York, tending to a girl who needs a cast on her arm. Loki timeslips in and out of the scene quickly. Mobius -- aka Don -- is in a branched timeline where he is a jetski store operator in 2022 Cleveland, Ohio. He tries, and fails, to sell a jetski to a customer. Loki timeslips to the store and talks to Don, who doesn't recognize him.

In 1994 Pasadena, O.B. (also known as A.D. Doug) tries -- and fails -- to sell his own book at a bookstore. He returns home (to a house that looks a lot like his office in the TVA) and Loki timeslips to him, and he immediately believes his story. O.B. argues that Loki should theoretically be able to control his timeslipping and end up back at the TVA, because the ability already seems to be evolving better. Loki argues that the TVA is the last defense to stop Kang and what's coming, and O.B. says that mission to save the TVA should be something Loki can control. Loki tries to deliberately timeslip, and fails. O.B. tries different things -- electric shocks, scaring him -- to activate it, but that doesn't work either. O.B. eventually suggests that they get the group back together, and track their collective temporal auras back to the TVA. The only problem is that O.B. doesn't think he can build a TemPad from scratch, but Loki is able to give him the TVA manual to help -- only to timeslip again.

Loki ends up outside of Mobius/Don's house, where he is trying to rein in his two kids, Kevin and Sean. Loki approaches, and Don decides to sell him one of his personal jet skis, because he doesn't need two after the death of his wife. Loki starts telling Don about Mobius' real life, and he initially is skeptic -- until O.B. shows up through a Time Door with the fully-functioning TemPad, which took him 19 months to build. Don worries about leaving his boys behind, but eventually agrees to go with Loki. He is able to convince both Hunter B-15 and Casey/Frank to join the cause as well. They all regroup at O.B.'s house.

That still leaves Sylvie, who is back at McDonalds in the 80s. Her bag of food starts to disappear, just as Loki arrives through a Time Door. Sylvie's life didn't get reset when the Loom exploded, so she immediately invites Loki into her car and takes him to a local bar. Loki argues that everyone should have the choice to stay with the TVA or return to their normal lives, and Sylvie disagrees. Loki says he wants his friends back, because he doesn't belong without them. Loki returns to O.B.'s house, and tells everyone to go back home.

Sylvie listens to a Velvet Underground record at her local record store, as reality starts to bleed and disappear around her. At the last possible second, she uses a Time Door to escape and arrive at O.B.'s house. Sylvie admits that time is falling apart, and the team tries to find the TemPad, just as Casey begins to disappear. O.B., Hunter B-15, and Mobius all do the same. Sylvie admits that there's nowhere left to go, and she disappears. Loki begins to cry out at the time around him, and that somehow manages to timeslip him back in time -- first a few seconds, and then a minute or so. He tells the group that he was able to successfully control it, by focusing on the "who" he wants to travel back to.

He successfully time slips back to before the Loom exploded.

Marvel D.A.G.G.E.R. Review: A Satisfying Co-op Experience That Doesn't Quite Reach its Potential https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/marvel-d-a-g-g-e-r-review-a-satisfying-co-op-experience-that-doesnt-quite-reach-its-potential/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 01:08:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar cd0f5a47-7265-4b17-8723-254e1a003dfb

The heroes of the Marvel Universe are yours to command in Fantasy Flight Games' Marvel D.A.G.G.E.R., a cooperative game for one to five players that has a team of heroes attempting to take down the nemesis before they can implement their grand plan. To do that you'll need to utilize your special powers to boost yourself as well as your teammates while also racing against the clock to complete missions before the Threat Limit has been reached. The amount of options and the number of playable heroes are impressive, but there's just something missing in the individuality of those heroes. When coupled with the substantial setup and a few other quirks, the game isn't quite able to reach its full potential, but there's still a lot of fun to be had.

The roster of Marvel D.A.G.G.E.R. is stacked, as you can choose to play as Captain Marvel, Photon, Black Widow (Natasha and Yelena), Iron Man, War Machine, Spider-Man (Peter and Miles), Black Panther (T'Challa and Shuri), Doctor Strange, Brother Voodoo, Captain America (Steve and Sam), Daredevil, Elektra, Hulk, and She-Hulk. That's a fantastic roster of heroes, but how they're implemented is also quite novel.

marvel-dagger-review-1.jpg
(Photo: ComicBook)

The Hero Sheets with each character are double-sided, and the Team-Up and Support cards are to be shared between characters. Characters of a similar nature are on either side of a Hero Sheet, so for example, Captain America's Steve and Sam are opposites of the same sheet. You will choose one side to be your character, but if you are taken out during the game, you won't bring that character back. Instead, you will flip the sheet and play as the other character for the rest of the game; since they share Support and Team-Up cards however, and you don't change the Aspect Sheet (more on that in a minute), only the character's core abilities will change.

It's an interesting way to shake things up midway through the game without setting your momentum back, though you might have to shift your strategies depending on the new character's powers. There's also the Aspect Sheet to consider, which represents a trait like Aggression, Protection, Justice, Leadership, Vigilance, and Determination. At the beginning of the game, you can choose any Aspect to go with your hero, though some are obviously better fits than others. They all have the same main core actions, but they differ in how you can boost them, and each sheet features one special passive ability to consider as well.

The amount of variety in characters, how they pair with the various Aspects, and how you interact with your team gives gameplay some welcome depth as far as your own actions, and that increases when you mix in the ability to empower players, prime enemies, use actions at a Base, and utilize Support and Team-Up cards, you've got plenty of options at your disposal.

The problem comes in that the characters more often than not don't really feel all that special. Some are better than others, but I don't see many playing Spider-Man, Captain America, or Doctor Strange and feeling like they are truly those characters. Captain America for instance has one great ability called Intervene, which is available when he's empowered and allows him to move to another hero's space when they are attacked to prevent some damage. That feels like Cap, but the Super-Soldier and Defiant abilities feel like they could really be anyone because they are associated with Priming enemies and Boosting actions, things that are rather commonplace during the game.

marvel-dagger-review-2.jpg
(Photo: ComicBook)

That same method is applied to many of the characters, so while there are a lot of options to mix and match, most of them never achieve the desired effect of making you feel like you're in the shoes of one of your favorite heroes. The Support Cards help, but because they are shared between the two heroes, they will always feel tacked on for one of them; plus the Team-Up cards don't push that individuality either for obvious reasons. That leaves the Hero Mission cards, which do help, giving you the option to unlock another strong ability, but you have to complete that mission first, and only one hero can complete their mission at a time. Suffice it to say, I encourage you to get those open early, as they are immensely useful, especially Daredevil's!

That brings us to the enemies you are fighting, including Loki, Ultron, Red Skull, or Thanos as the main nemesis. Marvel D.A.G.G.E.R. also includes several weaker villains to fight, which will make their way to the board through Event Cards that you have to draw every round. Each Nemesis genuinely feels distinct and poses a challenge in a different way, and you'll face each one in a customized showdown to ultimately claim victory.

You'll get more out of the battle experience if you play with at least four players, as more henchmen activate at four players, and that in turn allows you to fulfill some of the missions activated by defeating enemies on the board more quickly. You're consistently trying to complete missions to keep the threat from going over the current limit, but you'll still want to take some actions and unlock support, team-up, and hero missions to get the most out of the game.

At times that makes for a more plodding experience in the early going, but it will pay off as you make your way through the game. That isn't as approachable a method for new players though, and there's significant effort in setting up the game and all its various decks and standees to get the game started in the first place, which is another small hurdle.

marvel-dagger-review-3.jpg
(Photo: ComicBook)

Overall Marvel D.A.G.G.E.R. is an entertaining and challenging cooperative experience that features welcome layers of depth and replayability. That said, the stars of the show are supposed to be the heroes, and most of them are missing some of the flair and key elements that would make them feel like the heroes you know and love. Combined with the effort in getting the game to the table and some of the slow-burn nature of early turns, it's not as likely to make it back to my table as other Titles set in that universe.

Invincible Season 2 Opening Sequence Explained https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/invincible-season-2-opening-scene-explained-evil-mark-omni-man-mulitverse/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 00:40:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 0956561f-dd7b-499d-92ea-a53fa99eed31

Invincible Season 2 has premiered on Amazon Prime Video and needless to say a lot of fans are in shock about how the second season begins!

(MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW!)

invincible-season-2-premiere-recap.jpg
(Photo: Amazon Prime Video)

The opening sequence for Invincible Season 2 sees Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun) battling with The Immortal (Ross Marquand), the Guardians of the Globe hero his father murdered (twice). The Immortal alludes to Mark needing to pay for all he's done, while Mark is unusually calm and collected - even as The Immortal gets the upper hand in the fight. That upper hand is lost (quite literally) when Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) arrives on the scene by severing Immortal's hand to free Mark, then quickly dispatches him with a flurry of punches and a decapitating head chop. The scene twists even further when Mark and his father actually exchange pleasantries, as we learn they have now combined forces and enslaved the Earth in the name of the Viltrumite Empire.

The scene then moves to a lone figure moving through the dystopia ruins of the city. Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) passes a large screen running Invincible's propaganda message calling for humanity's surrender, on an endless loop. Levy then makes contact with what's left of the Guardians of the Globe and their resistance group - led by surviving heroes Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), and Rudy Connors/Robot (Zachary Quinto/Ross Marquand). Invincible and Omni-Man then burst into the resistance base, to finish the Guardians off. Robot and Connors are killed in battle, but Mark snaps Atom Eve's neck just enough to paralyze her, so he can keep her as a companion. The rest of the resistance is rounded up for execution, but Levy escapes death by dropping through the floor into a portal, leaving Omni-Man and Invincible confused yet indifferent about what's happened.

Invincible Season 2 Opening Sequence Explained - Is It Real?

(Photo: Amazon Prime Video)

By the time we get to the end of Invincible Season 2 Episode 1, it's made clear what was happening in the bewildering opening to the premiere. Angstrom Levy turns out to have the superpower of opening portals between dimensions and seems to be on a mission of bringing peace to the multiverse by using the combined knowledge of his own variants to solve problems across realities.

In talking with the Mauler Twins, Angstrom Levy reveals that he hails from one of the realities where Invincible made the choice to join Omni-Man rather than fight him. The Season 2 opening teases what reality for Earth would be if that were to ever happen in the main reality of the show; it's also a possible foreshadowing that this united team of Omni-Man and Evil Invincible could end up finding their way across realities, having seen Levy do it.

Invincible Season 2 is streaming its first four episodes every Friday on Prime Video.

Marvel's Loki Season 2 Premiere Ratings Lower Than Season 1 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-premiere-streaming-ratings-season-1-marvel-mcu/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 22:45:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely d5d1fab9-eea5-40da-8a86-87e7662ae3f2

Loki remains one of the most critically acclaimed TV projects from Marvel Studios to-date, and it's still the only television project from the studio to return for a second season. There's no denying the Tom Hiddleston-starring series is immensely popular, but the streaming numbers for the new season haven't quite stood up to the first.

Loki Season 2 Final Episodes

Loki delivered a shocking twist at the end of the fourth episode of Season 2, essentially ending the TVA as we all knew it and sending fans into the great unknown for the last two episodes of the season. According to series composer Natalie Holt, those final two episodes are a sight to behold.

"I can't wait for people to see Episode 6," Holt told ComicBook.com in a recent interview.

Vengeance of the Moon Knight Trailer Released by Marvel https://comicbook.com/comics/news/vengeance-of-the-moon-knight-trailer-marvel-comics-mcu/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 21:10:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 55dc29c4-0e90-42ea-af6f-9a8e5ba2c83e

We're currently in The Last Days of Moon Knight, and Marvel is preparing readers for a new era for the Fist of Khonshu in a new Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1 trailer. The series by writer Jed MacKay and artist Alessandro Cappuccio has been a breakout hit for the publisher, and Moon Knight #28-30 seemed to be setting up the big finale of their run. However, MacKay confirmed in April that Moon Knight wasn't being canceled. Instead, the current run will come to an end, and a new series, titled Vengeance of the Moon Knight, will take its place from the same creative team. Marvel has released a new look at the series through a captivating trailer featuring artwork from Cappuccio.

Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio's Moon Knight has run for 30 issues, with the duo revitalizing the Moon Knight mythos. A new fist of Khonshu, Hunter's Moon, was introduced; Moon Knight's archenemy Black Spectre returned, and Marc Spector even found a new calling as the head of his Midnight Mission. But once The Last Days of Moon Knight concludes, a new avatar of Khonshu will take over the mantle of Moon Knight. This person's identity is being kept a secret, but artwork for Vengeance of Moon Knight shows off a new, black costume, with the person under the mask most likely Marc Spector's newest ally, Hunter's Moon.

Marvel to introduce an all-new Moon Knight

"MOON KNIGHT may be dying, but VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT rises, clawing itself from the grave!" MacKay said. "We're thrilled to bring the next chapter of this saga to uneasy life as the Midnight Mission reels from a recent loss... and yet, Moon Knight still stalks the night time streets? Despite the apocalyptic events of MOON KNIGHT #28-30, we have plenty left to tell in the story of the Moon Knight, and I'm excited for readers to join us!"

Explaining the new design, Cappuccio said, "We needed a new black suit in this series so here we are! For the design, I took inspiration from ancient Egyptian banded armor while trying to stay true to the mood of the character. I replaced the classic batons with similar weapons that are reminiscent of the flowers of the Nile as depicted in the hieroglyphics. He is a new Moon Knight in both appearance and spirit and needed a change of look to suit the situation as you will see!"

Moon Knight #30 goes on sale December 13th, followed by Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1 on sale January 3rd.

Marvel's Blade Writer Refutes Rumor Mahershala Ali Was "Fourth Lead" in Female-Led Reboot https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-blade-mcu-writer-refutes-rumor-mahershala-ali-fourth-lead-female-led-script/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 20:15:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo eadbbb63-ed11-49c7-818b-15b3785f85e6

A writer on Marvel Studios' Blade reboot is taking a wooden stake to rumors that the vampire hunter was to be "the fourth lead" in his first solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Variety reported that the twice-delayed reboot -- which Marvel producer Kevin Feige announced at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2019 -- "at one point morphed into a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons" and relegated Mahershala Ali's Blade to the background. And Ali, the two-time Oscar winner who called the studio and told Feige he wanted to be Blade, was reportedly "ready to exit" the turbulent production that has gone through two directors and at least five writers.

One of those writers, Michael Starrbury, has offered a comment amid speculation that Blade was to focus on Brielle Brooks, the half-human, half-vampire daughter of Blade.

"I worked on a draft of this before the strike. Never saw a version where Blade was 4th lead or it was a 'narrative led by women and filled with life lessons' but I suppose a lot could have happened since I had anything to do with it. He was in 99% of the scripts I was a part of," Starrbury wrote on X (formerly Twitter). In a subsequent post, the Emmy-nominated When They See Us writer added: "Whatever is going on with Blade I'm hoping for the best. Some good folks are involved in that joint."

Starrbury then added that Ali's Blade "was in almost every scene" while he was on board the project. "I don't know what happened but I'll just say I seriously doubt he was ever the 4th lead in any draft."

Starrbury boarded Blade last November when Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country, White Boy Rick) replaced director Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli). Deadline reported at the time that Marvel Studios was eyeing a "darker tone" on Blade "than other MCU projects have been in the past," though it was unclear if it would be as dark as the R-rated trilogy that starred Wesley Snipes.

Stacy Osei-Kuffour (HBO's Watchmen) was the first scribe hired on Blade. Tariq took another stab at the script, and Beau DeMayo (Marvel's Moon Knight, X-Men '97) turned in a draft before Starrbury was hired with Demange. In April, Marvel tapped Ali's True Detective writer Nic Pizzolato around the time that Blade cast X and Pearl star Mia Goth in an undisclosed role. According to Variety, Feige hired Emmy and Oscar-nominated writer Michael Green -- whose credits include Fox's gritty, R-rated Logan and Blade Runner 2049 -- to overhaul Blade and start from scratch.

Blade is currently set to release on February 14, 2025.

Loki Season 2 Composer Teases Massive Final Episodes https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-mcu-loki-season-2-final-episodes-tease-composer/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 19:33:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 7c1fa1a5-1ff9-4bd2-b428-a3848615e112

Loki's composer teased those final two episodes of the Disney+ series. It feels like things are headed for truly a truly epic conclusion with Loki. Natalie Holt spoke to ComicBook.com about her time working on the music for the series. However, there are some secrets too big to spill. "I'd say, I can't wait for people to see Episode 6," Holt told us. This echoes comments made by producer Kevin Wright and other people who have worked on the show. Episode 4's shocking conclusion shook the MCU's fanbase with that dramatic death. Now, Loki heads into the literal and figurative unknown as the TVA was destroyed last week. Check out what Holt had to say right here.

"And, for me, it was the most, just satisfying thing to write," the composer continued. "Yeah, I just felt, I feel kind of like so emotionally tied up with the character. Because I've been working on th show for such a long time now. What it feels like. And, you know, what happens to Loki, I feel like I go on this journey with him every time I worked on a season. What's Waiting In Loki's Next Episode?

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

Loki cinematographer Isaac Bauman spoke to ComicBook.com about the final two episodes. In his comments, he hyped Episode 5 and 6 with praise for the final shots. Loki has been through so much in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It makes sense that the current run of his series would stack up to the other Tom Hiddleston appearances in these movies. So many things have happened already, if the finale can live up to this hype, the fans will be satisfied.

"We shot the climactic sequence of the season, at least a major piece of it, the significant piece, on a single day, on a sound stage very near the end of our shoot," Bauman shared. "I think it was probably the most meaningful day of the whole production because you could feel just the weight of this story, Loki's story, which has gone on for so long, closing this chapter at least."

"It felt like once we're finished shooting this sequence, we as a crew, as creatives, we have now contributed a very significant chapter in the story of one of the greatest characters of our generation," Bauman added. "It actually felt that way on set, which is incredible."

Episode 5 and 6 Are The Best Of The Season

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

If this wasn't enough praise, producer Kevin Wright told Marvel.com to expect big things out of the last two entries as well. It feels like Episodes 5 and 6 are hiding some pretty big reveals. Despite a teaser for tonight's fifth installment trying to get rid of some of that mystery, there's still a ton to be answered as Loki Season 2 nears its end. Wright told the outlet that we haven't seen anything yet!

"What we always like to do in all of the scripts, and in all of our storytelling, is that thing you think is going to happen in Episode 6, or could happen in the finale or towards the end, what happens if we move that forward? What if we just accelerate all of the storytelling, hit it early," Wright said.

"I think that's the beauty of Episodes 5 and 6. If people liked Episode 4, I genuinely think 5 and 6 are maybe the two best episodes of the series," added Wright. "They're beautiful and they're profound. They're deeply moving. And we only get to go there because of that story acceleration."

How Will Loki Season 2 End?

#10: WOLVERINE #36 - RYAN STEGMAN - REGULAR | MARVEL | 2023 | This book took the community by storm the moment it hit local comic shops' shelves. It has continued to make waves as fans eagerly seek the first appearance of Hellverine. Surprisingly, the character's reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with this book remaining in high demand two months after its release. The hype has also extended to other issues in the "Weapons of Vengeance" storyline (see runners-up). The 2nd print 1:25 retailer incentive has already achieved an impressive raw NM FMV of $79 and continues to rise. We tracked it at a high sale of $120 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM FMV of $23.

#9: THE OMEGA MEN #3 | DC | 1983 | Lobo was once an unlikely candidate for a big-screen adaptation, but recent changes in the DCU, spearheaded by James Gunn, have opened up new possibilities. Speculation has swirled around Jason Mamoa's potential portrayal of Lobo, and ambiguous responses from both Mamoa and Gunn have fueled further speculation. The most recent rumor suggests Mamoa's involvement in the upcoming Superman: Legacy project. While nothing is confirmed, fans continue to snatch up this book week after week. We tracked it at a high sale of $380 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $84.

#8: FANTASTIC FOUR #244 | MARVEL | 1982 | The latest MCU rumors have ignited interest in this book, marking the first appearance of Frankie Raye as Nova, a herald of Galactus. Speculation suggests that the first herald we may encounter in the MCU will be female, making this book a focal point of attention. While it's not the Nova from the Nova Corps, but rather a title Frankie assumes as a herald, fans have eagerly anticipated Galactus's arrival since his appearance in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Despite the lack of official confirmation, fans have eagerly picked up this book. We tracked it at a high sale of $460 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw FN FMV of $22.

#7: BENEATH THE TREES WHERE NOBODY SEES #1 - PATRICK HORVATH - COVER A | IDW | 2023 | IDW isn't typically known for its dark and gruesome titles, but this book has defied expectations. It gained immediate attention upon release, with affordable copies quickly disappearing online. The consensus within the community is that this book demands adaptation. Even without substantial content, the concept of anthropomorphic animals confronting a serial killer has captured the imagination. It's a unique blend of horror and the classic animal storybooks of Richard Scarry, attracting a dedicated following. To quote comic enthusiast Patton Oswalt, "FINALLY, MURDER AND FORENSICS ARE ADORABLE!" We tracked it at a high sale of $34 for a raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $13.

#6: FANTASTIC FOUR #164 | MARVEL | 1975 | While Frankie Raye has already been mentioned, this is the book where she first appears, alongside Crusader (Marvel Boy) before their involvement with Galactus. When rumors began to circulate that the first female herald of Galactus would make her MCU debut, the community quickly embraced this book. Typically, the first appearance of an alter ego fetches higher prices in the aftermarket, but this book takes a different approach. It features the character behind the alter ego (Nova) and commands nearly double the price for a CGC 9.8 copy. This is likely due to the double first appearance and the expectation that Marvel will likely retain the name Frankie Raye but introduce an alternate alter ego name. This book is also less common than #244, reflecting in its pricing. We tracked it at a high sale of $1,000 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw FN FMV of $15.

#5: MARVEL SUPER-HEROES SECRET WARS #8 | MARVEL | 1984 | We'll refrain from spoilers for the recently released Spider-Man 2, but it's safe to say that Venom plays a pivotal role. All the marketing materials feature Venom prominently, along with Spider-Man wearing the iconic black suit in the game. Naturally, fans have revisited one of the most iconic appearances of the Black Suit. While it's not the first appearance of the Black Suit, it is the one most fans associate with it. The suit's iconic status is reflected in aftermarket sales. We tracked it at a high sale of $650 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw VF FMV of $127.

#4: DAZZLER #1 | MARVEL | 1981 | Although there is still no official confirmation, director Shawn Levy's recent comments have reignited speculation about Taylor Swift's possible appearance as Dazzler in Deadpool 3. Levy's response, "That would be a great idea," has energized the excitement surrounding this book. With Taylor Swift's recent rise to billionaire status as a pop star, she is more suitable than ever to portray the character. Fans continue to focus on securing the first issue of her first ongoing solo title rather than her initial appearance, offering a chance to obtain a recalled copy at a more affordable price. We tracked it at a high sale of $277 for a CGC 9.8 and a current raw NM FMV of $21.

#3: SPAWN #1 | IMAGE | 1992 | Spawn consistently ranks as a top performer, frequently appearing on year-end "heaviest mover" lists. While a Spawn movie is in development, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum recently reaffirmed its release in 2025. The new Spawn film is described as "edgy," creating anticipation among fans. Jason Blum's incentive to push the movie forward may have increased due to the success of Five Nights at Freddy's, which has already grossed over $130 million globally as of this writing. We tracked it at a high sale of $200 for a CGC 9.8 and a current raw NM FMV of $35.

#2: UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: DRACULA #1 - GABRIEL RODRIGUEZ - LUNAR RETAILER THANK YOU (1 PER STORE) | IMAGE | 2023 | The community had this book on its radar for some time. When news spread that James Tynion IV was working on a Dracula project, fans eagerly anticipated its release. Tynion's expertise in horror heightened expectations, and the book coincidentally arrived just before Halloween. A fortunate few secured this 1-per-store "Thank You" variant, one of 11 variants this book received. Those who missed out were determined to acquire a copy on the aftermarket, perfectly timed for the spooky season. We tracked it at a high sale of $50 for a raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $40.

#1: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #36 - ARTHUR ADAMS (1:25) | MARVEL | 2023 | This book introduces the Repossessor (Editor's note: In a Marvel Comics solicitation on X, they call him "the repulsive Re-Po"). The Repossessor is a demonic repo man unearthed by Goblin Queen to "reclaim her children." However, that's not the only aspect capturing the community's attention. The 1:25 Arthur Adams variant featuring Black Cat has generated considerable interest. Much like Catwoman and Harley Quinn, Black Cat has a dedicated fanbase that eagerly collects variant covers featuring her. While her appearances may be less frequent, fans are always enthusiastic when she takes center stage. We tracked it at $60 for a raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $39.

Ravonna Renslayer Is the Best Part of Loki Season 2 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/ravonna-renslayer-loki-season-2-storyline-villain-marvel-mcu/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 04:45:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 9bd1438d-a768-4c8f-8378-decf94bc02bb

We're nearing the final stretch of Loki Season 2, a Disney+ series that is promising to change the status quo of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some major ways. Across the four episodes we've seen thus far, that has definitely been the case, with some surprising personal stakes for Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and those in his orbit. But amid the Temporal Loom and the Victor Timely of it all and the looming threat of Secret Wars, one element of Loki Season 2 has stood out -- the journey that Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) has gone on.

From the second she was confirmed to be in Loki's ensemble cast, it was clear that Ravonna was headed on a unique journey. In the comics, the character has evolved from the space princess of a far-future colony, to a paramour of Kang the Conqueror, to a full-fledged assassin donning the name Terminatrix. She has been reborn, rebooted, and cloned against her will -- but she has still sporadically found ways to matter in the grand tapestry of Marvel Comics, decades after her initial debut. With Mbatha-Raw's Ravonna initially being introduced as a leader at the Time Variance Authority (and the track record of comic accuracy across the MCU itself) it was safe to assume that we probably wouldn't get an exact adaptation of her comic status quo. And to an extent, we didn't -- once the members of the TVA began to wake up from their brainwashing in the later parts of Season 1, we learned that Ravonna is not a space princess at all, but a Variant of Rebecca Tourminet, an ordinary Vice Principal at an Ohio high school.

But if Loki has proven anything, it's that a person can be so much more than their pre-ordained destiny -- and Ravonna has begun to illustrate that as well. Across the later episodes of Season 1, Ravonna began to reckon with the machinations of He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) creating the TVA, and set out on a mission to find him and get answers. Season 2 has explored that quest for answers, and so much more -- in Episode 3 alone, Ravonna helped create, developed a kinship for, and was betrayed by Victor Timely. This ordeal, and the way the characters around her dealt with Timely, proceeded to help her realize all of the ways she has been betrayed -- both by He Who Remains, and by the rest of the TVA, who have gone rogue in her brief absence. As we got into Episode 4 and Ravonna discovered the past partnership she had with He Who Remains, she got pushed even further, crushing many of the TVA agents to death in an impossibly-shrinking cube.

Yeah, you can't necessarily endorse every action Ravonna has taken in Loki Season 2 thus far -- but it's hard to deny that it's fun rooting for her. In a roundabout way, this journey of Ravonna "breaking bad" feels like a send-up to her comic counterpart, to the point where it wouldn't be too jarring to have her suddenly don her Terminatrix costume onscreen. Not only is she joining a still-small group of female MCU villains, but the kind of antagonist she is representing is still fascinating. At her core, Ravonna is a woman who has grown sick of being mistreated and disregarded by the world around her, and is finally deciding to take action. (Ravonna getting this development does help Marvel Studios if they decide to pivot away from Kang as their next franchise big bad, but that's a whole separate conversation.)

Ravonna's arc is also compelling to watch because, by and large, Loki Season 2 has not made space for significant growth among its other characters. Any other beats have been somewhat fleeting, like Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) developing more of a kinship to humanity after working at a 1980s McDonalds, Hunter X-5 / Brad Wolfe (Rafael Casal) balancing his allegiances with his love for acting, or Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) admitting that he doesn't want to know his real non-TVA identity. A lot of Loki's tension has been plot-driven, instead of character-driven -- even Loki himself has remained largely static and reactionary, outside of some glimpses of his former villainy and him using magic slightly more often. Maybe the next two episodes, which have already been teased in a spoiler-filled trailer, will change that, and deliver a magnum opus of character development. But even if it doesn't, at least we have Ravonna's weird and violent personal journey.

Hulu Adds One of the Best Sci-fi Trilogies Ever https://comicbook.com/movies/news/hulu-men-in-black-now-streaming-best-sci-fi-trilogy/ Wed, 01 Nov 2023 22:56:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw e8d5f845-72e2-4ecf-a57b-df05a44313b7

Hulu has added one of the best sci-fi movie trilogies out there: the Men In Black Trilogy!

Sure it may seem controversial now, but back when Will Smith was at the height of his popularity in 1997, he did an odd pairing with Tommy Lee Jones in what few even knew was a comic book movie. The first Men In Black went on to smash the box office, earning over half a billion on a budget that was less than $100 million. The film spawned two sequels in 2002 and 2012 - but by the third film, it seemed as though both the stars of the franchise and audiences had lost some passion for the franchise. That said, Men In Black 3 had a time-travel narrative that brought the franchise and its leads (Smith's Agent J and Lee's Agent K) full circle to some final resolutions that felt like it brought closure to the franchise.

Men In Black: International (2019) tried to convert the trilogy into an entire franchise universe, with Marvel's Thor franchise stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as the new agents carrying the franchise. A $253 million box office for a film budgeted at $100+ million made Sonyh put the franchise on standby, seemingly indefinitely.

The Men In Black Trilogy was streaming on Peacock earlier this year, and it seems like it must've had enough views for Disney and Hulu to bring it over to their streaming platform.

Check out synopses for the Men In Black Trilogy movies, below:

Men In Black (1997) - Based off of the comic book. Unbeknownst to other people, there is a private agency code named MiB. This agency is some kind of extra-terrestrial surveillance corporation. Then, one of the agency's finest men only going by the name "K" (Tommy Lee Jones) , is recruiting for a new addition to the agency. He has chosen James Edwards (Will Smith) of the N.Y.P.D. Then, one day, a flying saucer crashes into Earth. This was an alien a part of the "Bug" race. He takes the body of a farmer (Vincent D'Onofrio) and heads to New York. He is searching for a super energy source called "The Galaxy". Now, Agents J and K must stop the bug before it can escape with the galaxy.

Men In Black II (2002) - Kay and Jay reunite to provide our best, last and only line of defense against a sinister seductress who levels the toughest challenge yet to the MIBs untarnished mission statement: protecting the earth from the scum of the universe. It's been four years since the alien-seeking agents averted an intergalactic disaster of epic proportions. And now it's a race against the clock as Jay must convince Kay-who not only has absolutely no memory of his time spent with the Men In Black, but is also the only living person left with the expertise to save the galaxy-to reunite with the MIB before the earth submits to ultimate destruction.

Men In Black 3 (2012) - After breaking out of LunarMax, a moon-based maximum security prison, Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement) decides to go back in time and eliminate the person who arrested him - Agent K (Josh Brolin). When he does so, Agent J (Will Smith) realizes that the timeline has been changed and he too travels back to July 15, 1969, the day before Agent K is killed. After overcoming some disbelief, J manages to convince young K and others of just who he is and why he's there. With the help of Griffin (Michael Stuhlbarg), a being who can see all timelines, they track Boris down. J also learns a secret, something old Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) had never told him.

The Men In Black Trilogy is now streaming on Hulu.
